Veteran starter Jose Quintana managed to revive his career over the past few MLB seasons, and the latter two came as a member of the New York Mets.
Last year, Quintana was a key member of the Mets’ starting rotation, winning 10 games over 31 starts. He finished with a solid ERA of 3.75.
In 2025, the 36-year-old signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, and all was going well up until a recent shoulder injury.
Per MLB.com on May 16, Quintana “underwent tests on his shoulder/biceps on May 15 and the results were encouraging, according to [Brewers] manager Pat Murphy.”
At the time, Milwaukee hoped for a “minimum IL stint.” But that seems to have changed as of May 17, as Quintana is now seeking a “second opinion” on his shoulder, per Milwaukee Journal Sentinel beat writer Todd Rosiak.
Rosiak classified Quintana’s injury as a “shoulder impingement.”
Although nothing is for certain just yet, this would qualify as a concerning update for Quintana’s 2025 status.
Generally, athletes only seek second opinions when the news is bad. And Quintana wouldn’t be seeking one if he’s only expected to be on the injured list for the minimum amount of time.
After signing late, Quintana joined the Brewers’ major league club in mid-April, with his first start coming on April 11. The early returns have been impressive, however, as the grizzled left-hander is currently 4-1 with an ERA of 2.65.
Milwaukee has no shortage of injuries at starting pitcher, with potential SPs Aaron Ashby, Aaron Civale, Robert Gasser, DL Hall, Nestor Cortes and Brandon Woodruff all on IL alongside Quintana.
The Brewers find themselves three games under .500 entering May 17. They are 5.5 games back of the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs, and a whopping 7.5 games behind the Mets.
