Early shooting troubles kept the St. Edmond girls from getting back into a North Central Conference contest with defending league champion Algona here Tuesday night.
The 15th-ranked (Class 3A) Bulldogs were able to grind the Gaels down, securing a 45-28 victory inside the SEHS gym.
Algona (4-2 overall, 2-1 in league) received 12 points from Maya Lentz and 10 by freshman Kate Limbaugh, helping them overcome 23 turnovers.
For St. Edmond (2-2, 2-1), Chloe Palmer had 13 points with five steals and ninth-grader Eden Horn added six with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.
“We pressed a few things,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “We were trying to do too much and we weren’t playing our game. I’ll take the blame for that as the head coach.”
The Bulldogs raced out to a 10-0 lead behind a triple from Lentz, who finished with five in the first quarter. The advantage would grow to as many as 15 before halftime, as Limbaugh came off the bench to score eight.
In the third, the Gaels cut it down to 10 but would get no closer, as Algona finished off the quarter on a buzzer-beater by Taylor VanOtterloo for her only three points of the contest.
“We had a lot of adversity thrown our way and I don’t think we handled it very well,” Tracy said. “But it’s December and these are all great learning opportunities. We will learn from this and be better when we play (Algona) again and be better for the rest of the season.
“These girls never quit and I told them that after. I love the energy and the determination to continue to fight and get better.”
Anna Lursen chipped in four points with four steals and three rebounds, Abby Huss had three steals and Olivia Andrew recorded four rebounds and a blocked shot off the bench for the Gaels.
St. Edmond closes out the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule on Friday at Hampton-Dumont/CAL.
