Rory McIlroy impressed in the second round of the Genesis Scottish Open, while Chris Gotterup equalled the course record to lead into the weekend.
Playing a week before The Open, McIlroy carded six birdies and one bogey on his way to a second-round 65 to leave him seven under par and four off the lead moving into the weekend.
But he was outshone by American Gotterup, who shot a superb 61 to equal the course record at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick.
World No 158 Gotterup carded nine birdies in his bogey-free round to finish the second on 11 under par.
The American is closely pursued by three Englishmen. Harry Hall is two strokes back after posting a six-under 64, while a seven-under 63 leaves Matt Fitzpatrick in a tie for third with compatriot Marco Penge and Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg
McIlroy is tied on seven under with six other players. World No 3 Xander Schauffele is in the group at six under, with world No 1 Scottie Scheffler one shot further back at five under in tied-21st after shooting a second-round 68.
“I got off to a bit of a flier,” McIlroy said. “The conditions were so benign this morning, hardly any wind.

“I started to struggle a little bit, hit a couple of wayward drives but did well to scramble for pars. Disappointed to drop one coming in there but overall it’s a really good score and puts me right in the thick of things going into the weekend.
“Being aggressive off the tee on links golf courses and taking the bunkers out of play, if the rough isn’t too bad, has always been a pretty good strategy for me.
“I’m sticking with that for the week. Sometimes it gets you in trouble but most of the time it works out pretty well.”

However, while this year’s Masters champion is safely through to the weekend, US Open champion JJ Spaun’s week is over after three bogeys in a round of 72 left him at two over.
Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre needed a birdie on the par-three 17th to confirm his place in the weekend as he finished on the one-under cut line. MacIntyre had earlier double bogeyed the par-four 13th.
Padraig Harrington also squeaked through at one under, with Justin Rose just ahead at two under after a second-round 68.
