The deficit has grown sharper over the past week as San Francisco dropped its fourth straight game, two against the divisional rival Dodgers and two against the Cleveland Guardians—even after Justin Verlander returned from a right pectoral injury. In his latest outing against the Guardians, Verlander pitched 4.2 innings and allowed four runs, while newly acquired designated hitter Rafael Devers went hitless.
Over the four-game slide, the Giants’ pitching staff has allowed a total of 23 runs—an uncharacteristic performance for a squad that currently boasts a team ERA of 3.26, ranking them third in MLB.
Additionally, San Francisco has been without veteran third baseman Matt Chapman for eight straight games since June 8, when he injured his right hand on a pick-off attempt diving back to first base, resulting in right hand inflammation.
According to the latest injury update on MLB.com, Chapman is “expected to continue wearing his splint through the end of the week but is participating in light conditioning and baseball activities.”
Chapman, a five-time Gold Glove winner and one of the league’s premier defensive third basemen, had been batting .243 with an .812 OPS and 12 home runs in his first 65 games of the season.
The numbers indicate that when healthy, Chapman not only contributes with his glove but also provides a boost at the plate—a complete threat that the slumping Giants miss as his expected return will be a key factor in helping San Francisco close the gap in the NL West.
