Shubman Gill played a splendid knock of 269 in the first innings of the Birmingham Test, which helped India post 587 runs on board. However, that wasn’t enough for his father Lakhwinder Gill as he hoped that his son would get a triple century.
“It means a lot coming from him (his dad). But he did also tell me that I missed my triple century. Hopefully, we’ll end this match on a great note,” Gill said in a video released by BCCI.
The senior Gill also added that watching his son bat in the first innings reminded him of the Indian skipper’s U16 and U19 days when he used to play for Punjab and score big runs.
“Well played, I enjoyed watching your batting, and my heart was at peace. You were batting like in your childhood U16 and U19 days, and your batting felt that way— I felt very proud,” Lakhwinder said in the audio that Gill played. Gill’s mother, Keart Kaur Gill, also expressed her happiness at the knock. “Felt amazing watching you bat, keep going, God bless you,” she said.
Reacting to the message, the Indian skipper added that it meant a lot to him as he only listens to his father and his friend Khushpreet Aulakh when it comes to his cricket.
“This message means a lot to me. I think, growing up, I played almost all of my cricket for my dad, in the sense that it was because of him that I started playing,” Gill said.
“And the only person besides him is my best friend, whom I practised with. These are the only two people, when it comes to my cricket, that I care about and that I listen to.”
