In a spectacular night celebrating sporting excellence, Guernsey’s men’s cricket team shone at the Guernsey Sports Commission’s 2024 awards. The island’s representatives achieved a remarkable feat by winning their T20 World Cup qualifying tournament, propelling them into the final round of qualification for the highly anticipated event set to unfold in India and Sri Lanka next year.
For their impressive triumph, the team was awarded the prestigious Team Trophy for those competing in four or more events. Guernsey captain Ollie Nightingale shared his thoughts with BBC Radio Guernsey, stating, “The victory last summer was monumental for us; however, receiving any award is a testament to our hard work and dedication.” He expressed gratitude, acknowledging the fierce competition they faced, noting that several strong teams didn’t even make the shortlist. “It’s truly gratifying to emerge victorious. This evening is all about celebrating Guernsey’s sporting achievements rather than focusing on individual accolades,” he added.
The night was not solely about cricket, as other deserving athletes were recognized for their exceptional achievements. Bowler Jason Greenslade clinched the title for men’s outstanding individual sporting achievement, following his triumph at the World Indoor Bowls singles championship. Equally impressive was fellow bowler Alison Merrien, who secured the women’s counterpart for her seventh consecutive victory at the British Isles Championships.
Merrien’s accomplishments didn’t stop there, as she, alongside teammates Shirley Petit, Catherine Bonsall, and Rose Ogier, earned the team award for competitions with fewer than four competitors following their success at the Indoor Bowls Council Championships.
In further recognition of sporting brilliance, Olympic 400m hurdler Alastair Chalmers was honored as the outstanding performer of the year, having reached the semi-finals at the Paris games, despite a fall with just 150 meters remaining. Meanwhile, young golfer Conor McKenna was named young sportsperson of the year, shining bright at the age of 17 after clinching both the Guernsey and Channel Island men’s and junior singles titles.
