Gujarat Confidential: Beyond Cricket – The Indian Express

Vice president of Indian Olympic Association Ajay Patel, on Sunday, had an advice for young sports enthusiasts: that they should play different games and not just focus on cricket. Patel was speaking at the convention of Kreeda Bharati in Ahmedabad where he made suggestions on selecting games to play and ways to move forward in the same. He said, “In the beginning, at a young age, every child should play two games. Then, as he/she grows up, the coach, and not the parents, should decide which game they should go forward in and how to work on it…What has happened today is that everybody gets interested in cricket…if you see the (Gujarat) University ground (in Ahmedabad), more than 200 teams play cricket on Sunday. All the games should be played.”

On Saturday, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), Sarbananda Sonowal, accompanied by Union Minister of Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs Mansukh Mandaviya, visited the ancient Harappan site of Lothal and later, the National Maritime Heritage Complex, about three kilometres away. However, the ministers did not brief the media and eventually, it was the MoPSW secretary T K Ramachandran who shared a few notes with the media with the help of authorities involved in the project, including the project director, architects, and Navy officials, among others, after much delay at the site in Lothal. Despite being the first high-profile visit to the ancient city after the incident involving the death of IIT Delhi PhD scholar Surabhi Verma, no reference was made to the episode. Sources, however, told this paper that they did make inquiries from officials on exactly how the accident happened.
