The Halton Hills Cricket Club finally has a home of its own.
The club and members of Halton Hills Council officially opened the group’s new cricket pitch in Trafalgar Sports Park Friday night.
The cricket pitch uses fields 8 and 9 at Trafalgar Sports Park, with a 20-metre by three-metre turf pitch located between the two, meaning it won’t interfere with any of the field’s previous uses – soccer, lacrosse and flag football.
“We look forward to seeing this field full of energy, with games, youth programs, and a growing cricket community that will bring people together,” said Hardeep Ghuman of the Halton Hills Cricket Club.
The club currently has more than 50 members and now with a permanent place to play, they hope to continue to grow the sport locally. It is already teaching the game to students through Georgetown District High School and hopes to expand that with a youth program for players as young as four years old.
“It will be a focus of a huge amount of activity and for the fun of sport,” said Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor, who delivered the ceremonial first bowl. “That we are really excited about. We know that by working together, we can make great things happen and we absolutely appreciate all of your involvement and for pushing us along to make this happen.”
The local club formed in 2021 and plays in leagues around the Greater Toronto area. It had previously been using local baseball diamonds, but without a permanent pitch, bowls didn’t bounce consistently and the field was not large enough.
The club approached the Town about creating a permanent field. Once a location was agreed upon, the club raised the funds to create the pitch.
“This is more than a place to play – it reflects a year of dedication, teamwork and shared vision,” Ghuman said.
He thanked the club’s executive for its continuing efforts to help the sport grow locally, to the sponsors who supported the club in building its first pitch and Town staff for their help in making the pitch a reality.
“We know, because you have told us many times, that cricket is experiencing significant growth in Canada, in the GTA and of course, in Halton Hills,” Lawlor said. “We appreciate your leadership, your enthusiasm, your sponsorship and your contributions to this great pitch.”
