West Indies captain Hayley Matthews has once again taken the cricketing world by storm, earning the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for June 2025, her fourth in total solidifying her status as one of the game’s premier all-round talents.
Matthews triumphed over strong competition, including South Africa’s Tazmin Brits and fellow West Indian Afy Fletcher. Notably, this is her fourth ICC Women’s Player of the Month award after having honours in November 2021, October 2023 and April 2024, matching Australia’s Ash Gardner for the most wins.
Matthews’ remarkable performances during West Indies’ 2-1 T20I series win over South Africa, held at home, were central to this recognition.
Matthews roared back from a 19 in the T20I series opener to deliver back-to-back knocks of 63* and 65, accumulating 147 runs at a strike rate of 120.49 and averaging 73.50, along with two crucial off-spin wickets. Her all-rounder effort led the West Indies to fight back from a 0-1 deficit to win the series 2-1.

Reflecting on the award, Matthews remarked, “It’s an honour to receive the Player of the Month award again. I’ve been pleased with my form recently, but more importantly, it’s been great to contribute to the team’s success- especially in a hard-fought T20I series against South Africa.
“Recognition like this is appreciated, but my focus remains on what’s ahead. There’s a lot more I want to achieve, both personally and with this team. We’re heading in the right direction, and I’m excited about where we can go from here.”

Even while managing injury, she delivered standout performances across formats. With recently battling a shoulder issue that required surgery, Matthews remained highly effective during the ODI leg of the home series. She scored 40 and 56 and took four wickets at an average of 34.25 in a tight 2-1 series loss.
As the West Indies women’s team gears up for upcoming tournaments, eyeing success at global events, Matthews remains critical to their plans and would hope for her speedy return from surgery and rehab. With her performance and leadership, the team is poised for further milestones on the global stage.
