NEW ULM — The 19th annual B&L Golf Classic ended in a playoff on Hole 18, with Corey Hillesheim sinking a 4-foot putt to win the playoff for his team and take first place at the New Ulm Country Club on Monday.
Hillesheim, teaming with Pete Guggisberg, Roddy Melzer, Dallas Loverude and Paul Wessel, turned in a score of 125 on Team 1B, but so did Team 10’s Pete Goeringer, Chad Cooreman, Javen Munce, Jackie Schuetzle and Shannon Smith, setting up the playoff, which started on Hole 10.
“I went, ‘Oh, crap, I’ve gotta go get my shoes back on and get the clubs,’” Hillesheim said. “The heart beat was racing a little bit, for sure. I played choker on both holes and had to play my own ball, too, so it’s a little more pressure.”
After a stalemate on Hole 10, a second playoff round took place on the 18th hole.
With first place in the bag and a 4-foot putt in front of him, Hillesheim lined up his putt and sank it.
“It was a little breaker, it was a tough one,” Hillesheim said.
Hillesheim said this was his fifth B&L Golf Classic and it’s his favorite tournament to compete in. While he sank the winning putt, Hillesheim said his teammates picked each other up all tournament.
“The team played really well,” Hillesheim said. “We all complimented each other well. When somebody needed to make a shot, they made a shot, and we just carried each other well.”
The team of Dan Reinhart, Rick Hulke, Duncan Larson, Marie Hort and Greg Thomas finished third in the tournament with a 127, while the team of Jared Zuhlsdorf, Ryan Dorn, Bruce Hendrycks, Gene Voges and Gary Kruggel took fourth (127).
The team of Nate Voges, Alex Kral, Jeremy Sudbeck, Jeff Schone and Garrett Freeman finished with a 128 for fifth, while the team of Matt Fischer, Jerry Boddy, Randy Voth, Tom Fenske and Ray Koberg took sixth with a 129. Finishing seventh with a 130 was the team of Randall Paa, Tom Portner, Jon Hunstad, Steve Hawkins and Don Olson, while the team of Jackson Ahlness, Trent Loverude, Mike Krueger, Mike Bornhoft and Dave Christiansen took eighth (130).
