England (Playing XI): Philip Salt(w), Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(c), Liam Livingstone, Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Saqib Mahmood
India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy
Rohit Sharma: It was a good performance in the first game. That’s what I loved about. The energy was very good despite not being on the field for a while. It was superb to watch after losing two wickets. Shreyas prides himself on that intent and attitude and not to forget the contributions of Shubman and Axar as well. Black soil pitch, not sure. Maybe play on the slower side, that’s what I expect. Two changes, Jaiswal makes way for Virat. Kuldeep is rested so Varun makes his debut.
Jos Buttler: We are going to bat first today. We have been pushing in the right direction, play better for longer and hopefully have a good day today. Looks a bit dry, black soil. Looks a good wicket. Three changes, Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton come into the XI.
England won the toss and opted to bat first against India at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on Sunday. India won the first match of the series at Nagpur.
The Barabati surface has historically favored batsmen, raising expectations for another 300-plus total. Both teams must capitalize on favorable conditions to gain an edge.
The inclusion of Mark Wood adds pace and aggression to England’s attack. His experience could be crucial in countering India’s strong batting unit.
With just two ODIs left before the Champions Trophy, India must decide between an extra spinner or an additional pacer. Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy remain in contention.
Livingstone’s resurgence in 50-over cricket post-World Cup 2023 has been impressive. With a staggering strike rate of 133 in recent games, he remains a key player.
Jadeja’s stellar form in ODIs continues, having claimed 31 wickets in his last 26 matches. His control and versatility make him India’s go-to all-rounder in the format.
Shami enters the match needing just four wickets to become the fastest Indian to 200 ODI scalps in terms of balls bowled—a testament to his consistency.
Despite an explosive top order, England’s ability to consolidate in the middle overs remains a concern. The lack of partnerships post-powerplay has been a recurring issue.
After missing the first ODI, Kohli’s comeback will strengthen India’s middle order. His presence adds experience and stability against England’s potent bowling attack.
India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, entered the game under scrutiny. With recent knocks of 58, 64, and 35, his form in ODIs remains steady despite a challenging Test phase.
