India Achieve Historic Low In Test Cricket, For First Time In 148 Years… – News18

England beat India by five wickets in the first Test of the five-match series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley in Leeds on Tuesday.
India became the first team in Test history to record five individuals scoring hundreds and yet ending up on the losing side.
India surpassed the previous record of four centuries in a losing cause, set by Australia against England during the iconic 1928/29 Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Regarding total runs scored in defeat, India’s 835-run effort at Headingley in 2025 now ranks as the fourth-highest total by a team that ended up losing a Test match. The top of this list remains with England, who scored 861 runs against Australia at Headingley in 1948, yet lost the match. Following that are Pakistan’s 847 against England in Rawalpindi (2022) and New Zealand’s 837 against England at Trent Bridge in 2022.

The fact that three of the five involve Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum’s Bazball era England side, speaks volumes about their impact on the longest format of the game and how it is played.
Resuming at 21 for no loss on the fifth and final day, England remained unscathed in the first session. Despite India fighting back with four wickets in the second session, England stayed ahead in the chase.
Chasing 371 for the win, the hosts reached 373 for 5 in 82 overs.

England’s successful chase of 371 runs in the fourth innings at Headingley was historic, marking one of the finest run chases in Test cricket history.
It is the second-highest successful chase by England in Test cricket. Their highest remains the iconic 378-run chase against India at Edgbaston in 2022, where Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root played match-winning knocks.
It was also the second-highest successful chase against India in Test history.
The chase is the third instance of a successful 350+ run chase at Headingley, making the ground uniquely significant in Test match history.
