India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer might not play in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30. The matches are scheduled to take place in Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam after India’s two-Test series that begins on November 14.
According to reports, Iyer is still recovering from an injury he suffered during the third ODI against Australia last month. He was hit on his lower left rib cage while fielding, which caused internal bleeding. The injury turned out to be more serious than first thought, and doctors have advised that he needs over a month to fully recover before returning to international cricket.
Sources revealed that during the incident, Iyer’s oxygen levels dropped to 50, and he briefly lost balance and blacked out. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Sydney, where he was treated for a lacerated spleen and internal bleeding. He has since been discharged and has returned home, but he is still not fit enough to train or play.
“He will take more time to be fully match fit and the board and selection committee doesn’t want to rush after his injury. He is doubtful for the South Africa ODI series,” a source in the Indian board confirmed, as quoted by The Indian Express.
Notably, the 30-year-old Mumbai batter had played two innings during the Australia tour, scoring 11 runs in Perth and 68 in Adelaide. Although he showed good form in patches, Iyer’s career has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries over the past few years.
If Iyer misses the South Africa series, it will be another setback for India’s middle-order plans ahead of next year’s major tournaments. The team management is expected to name a replacement soon if his recovery does not progress quickly.
For now, fans will have to wait and see whether Iyer can regain full fitness in time, but all signs suggest that he may miss the ODI series starting November 30 in Ranchi.
