Update on India A captain Rishabh Pant. He has returned to bat in the 2nd innings after enduring triple blows against South Africa A earlier on day 3.
Abhishek Sharma etched his name into cricketing history on Saturday, smashing a new record by becoming the fastest batter to reach 1,000 T20I.
The rain has stopped for now but the forecast suggests that there will be more. The crowd seems highly energetic and optimistic about a restart as the Umpires inspect the conditions.
Fewest Innings taken to 1000 T20I runs for India
    Virat Kohli: 27 innings
    Abhishek Sharma: 28 innings
    KL Rahul: 29 innings
    Suryakumar Yadav: 31 innings
    Rohit Sharma: 40 innings
We will most likely lose overs in this game, as the rain has gotten heavier in Brisbane. The pitch and square are covered, and spectators in the lower stands have moved up for shelter.
As suspected, it has now begun pouring down in Brisbane and the wait is set to be longer than just a few minutes. The good news is that the drainage is really good at the Gabba and once the rain stops, we can hope to have play resumes quite promptly.
It is not raining at the Gabba as yet, but the players are walking off already. The on-air commentators say there’s lightning in the background, and rain imminent too. Perhaps a precautionary measure by the umpires. Stay with us for further updates on the weather and play resumption.
The Australian fielders are being uncharacteristically butter-fingered tonight. After Maxwell, it is Ben Dwarshuis’ turn to drop Abhishek Sharma, and the southpaw makes them pay with a six three balls later. Meanwhile, Gill is off to a flier himself as India are scoring at almost 12 runs per over.
    IND: 47/0 (4)
It’s a fantastic atmosphere at the Gabba, with a sell-out crowd buzzing despite rain threat later. Ben Dwarshuis has the ball in hand and Abhishek Sharma faces up to him, with Shubman Gill at the other end. The southpaw gets off the mark with the second delivery, and that brings the much-talked about Gill on strike. The Test and ODI skipper is also off the blocks with a single.
Abhishek smacks a boundary, but is dropped by Glenn Maxwell, of all fielders, right after. Gill strokes a fluent four off the last ball as an eventful first over concludes.
    IND: 11/0 (1)
Suryakumar Yadav: “As long as you’re losing tosses, winning games it’s fine. Great atmosphere, we want to enjoy our cricket. Understanding team goals is key, batters realised that last game and decided to go for 175.
“Bowlers took wickets, fielders were energetic. Want to continue that. Always good to win bilaterals, but knowing what player fits where and what their fitness levels are. Boys are understanding their roles, that’s what T20 cricket is all about.”
Mitchell Marsh: “Good surface, great to come in on this great ground. Not exactly the same as the final of a tournament. But lots to play for, can level the series, last chance for us tonight. Last game, it was an indifferent conditions, different today.”
India: Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah
Australia: Mitchell Marsh (c), Matthew Short, Josh Inglis (wk), Tim David, Josh Philippe, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa
Australia have won the toss and chosen to bowl first against India. Rinku Singh replaces Tilak Verma in the Indian XI.
Gabba is no longer Australia’s fortress, and given India’s recent form, they have more than a fair chance to win and seal the series in their favour. Google gives Australia a 46% chance of victory, and India 54%.
There was a strong rain threat in the lead-up to today, but the weather forecast appears to have eased up a bit since. According to AccuWeather, there is a 55% chance of precipitation and a 23% chance of cloud cover. There is, however, a prediction of thunderstorms in some areas of Brisbane in the afternoon. You never really know with the weather.
The first ball will be bowled at 1:45pm IST, with the toss at 1:15pm IST, weather permitting. The India vs Australia, 5th T20I will be telecast on the Star Sports Network TV channels in India. It will be live streamed on the JioHotstar app and website in the country.
