    … THE RUN CHASE …
Right then, Australia will be fairly pleased to have limited the damage. The highest successful chase in Women’s ODIs stands at 302, but if any team can pull it off, it’s this Australian side, which bats deep, all the way down to number 10, with Alana King fresh off a half-century. The pitch has played true for the most part, apart from some gentle turn for the spinners. However, with dew expected to arrive, batting could get even easier in the second innings. The Indian pacers will need to take a cue from the way Annabel Sutherland bowled into the surface and took the pace off to be effective. It is all set up for an intriguing chase.
Pratika Rawal is up for a chat. She expresses her delight about the partnership with Smriti Mandhana, stating she’s a big fan of Mandhana’s game. Shares that she is thrilled about the century stand and acknowledges the challenging period with dot balls in between, but was satisfied with converting them into runs later. Adds that she played to her strengths, noting that she only took shots on her back foot when she was confident of hitting boundaries or sixes.
A timely double strike from Australia, however, meant that India were once again forced into rebuilding, and they found a brisk partnership through Richa Ghosh and Jemimah Rodrigues. At 287/4 with 8 overs to go and Ghosh and Jemimah set at the crease, the team in blue looked on course for a lot more, especially with Megan Schutt walking off the field after pulling up. Sutherland broke that flourishing stand, and from there, the Aussies kept chipping away at the wickets courtesy of Sutherland and the spinners. India lost their last 6 wickets for just 36 runs, with Annabel Sutherland finishing with a superb five-wicket haul.
Australia found it difficult to stem the flow of runs, and although Rawal seemed to be getting bogged down at one stage, Mandhana’s ability to pick up boundaries took the pressure off her during the 155-run opening stand. Smriti broke a couple of records along the way in her 80-run knock, becoming the first batter to score 1,000 runs in Women’s ODI cricket in a calendar year and also the fastest to reach 5,000 runs in ODIs in just 112 innings. After Mandhana’s departure, India’s innings had been hitting a wall, with runs drying up completely in previous games, but Harleen Deol and Harmanpreet Kaur kept the momentum going.
A fine effort from Australia to pull things back! At 192/1 at the end of 30 overs, India looked set to run away, but they were superbly halted in their tracks by the Aussies. It is not often that you can say a batting side has left a few runs out there after posting 330, but that is exactly the case tonight. After being asked to bat first, Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal were watchful in their approach, but with the introduction of Sophie Molineux inside the Powerplay and her opening over going for 16 runs, India were well on their way.
