… DAY 3, SESSION 2 …
Well then, another session in this second Test has flown by. The surface remains reasonably flat with no such moon-craters to trouble batters, but India will be alert, one more wicket could expose England’s lower order from one end. With a hefty lead in hand, India won’t mind England’s aggressive approach, especially if they can squeeze in a quiet phase to build pressure. That said, England has flipped the momentum in their favor and are mindful of what happened in the first innings. After all, the visitors were 211 for 5 before launching a marathon stand. Patience and partnerships might still be their best route back for India. With England still trailing by 338 runs, a very interesting post-Lunch session is on the cards. It will start at 6.10 pm IST (12.40 pm GMT). Stay tuned.
As the sun baked the surface and the ball softened, batting grew more comfortable. Brook and Smith capitalized, and kept the scoreboard moving. India’s field began to spread, slips disappeared, and Gill was suddenly chasing the game. The pressure shift also threw the spinners off rhythm. Jadeja, in particular, resorted to bowling on a length rather than full, unable to consistently draw the batters forward. Jamie Smith got off to his century and the duo saw through the morning session, stamping their authority.
But Harry Brook wasn’t going to retreat. He took the challenge head-on, counterattacking with flair and finding a willing partner in Jamie Smith. This duo of Yorkshire and Surrey quickly shifted the tone of the morning, putting the fall of two big wickets behind them. Smith made a statement by hammering 23 runs off a single Prasidh Krishna over just before drinks. In just the first 12 overs of the day, England had piled on 83 runs, with both batters racing to their fifties. India were forced to pull back, bringing on Jadeja and Sundar to slow things down, but Brook and Smith kept the tempo high.
It looked barren for the bowlers on the first two days, and while the pitch still offered plenty for batters, India’s attack came out on Day 3 with a spark lit by their late success on Day 2. That fiery burst in the final session had clearly stirred something, and the momentum carried over. Mohammed Siraj led the charge with a sensational early spell, removing Joe Root, strangling him down leg, and then sending Ben Stokes back the very next ball with a nasty lifter. England slipped further down to 84/5, searching for stability.
SESSION SUMMARY – 27 Overs, 172 Runs, 2 Wickets. What a thoroughly entertaining morning session this was! As called by the cricket pundits, the ‘Moving Day’ has indeed progressed at the rate of knots. The Indians started cockahoop with the ball, but ended the session finding breakthroughs as England painted it all red, scoring at a rate of 6.37. A true display of the ‘Bazball’ approach.
