Ben Stokes makes an immediate impact with the ball, beating KL Rahul’s outside edge with a probing delivery that shapes away off the seam. He follows it up with one straying down leg before tempting Rahul into a loose drive outside off, which fails to connect and flies safely to the keeper. It’s a testing maiden from Stokes, full of intent and trademark energy, hinting at potential breakthroughs to come.
A surprise yorker from Josh Tongue catches Yashasvi Jaiswal off guard, thudding into his pads with the bat nowhere in sight. But coming from round the wicket, the angle was always working against the bowler, and the DRS confirmed what Jaiswal suspected — the ball was comfortably sliding down leg and hadn’t even struck him in line. Adding insult to injury, Jaiswal responded in style on the very next delivery, unfurling a sumptuous straight drive past the bowler for four to close out the over.
Yashasvi Jaiswal endured a testing passage of play with a couple of nervy moments against the new ball. Chris Woakes beat him on the outside edge with a beautiful delivery that shaped away late, and shortly after, Jaiswal missed out on a cut shot off Brydon Carse, slashing at one that wasn’t quite there to hit. The pressure built further as Carse dug in a sharp back-of-a-length ball that rose awkwardly, cramping Jaiswal for room and thudding into his ribs — a painful blow that left the left-hander visibly uncomfortable at the crease.
Not as authoritative as Jaiswal’s earlier stroke, but KL Rahul will gladly take it. Facing his seventh delivery, he throws his hands at a full ball outside off from Brydon Carse and gets a thick outside edge. The ball flies in the air but safely races away through the vacant gully region for his first runs—a boundary. No further damage in the over as Carse keeps it tight, but Rahul is off the mark. Earlier, Jaiswal had opened India’s account in the Test with a streaky boundary of his own, edging Woakes behind square off the outside half. The Indian opener, who was the top scorer in the previous series between these two teams, has survived the early probing spells and is settling in.
Jaiswal opens his account—and the series’ boundary tally—with a streaky but effective four! It was full and just outside off, shaping away slightly from the left-hander. He reached out, playing late under his eyes, and managed a thick outside edge that rolled safely along the ground, threading the gap between third slip and gully. Not the most convincing start, but they all count, and India are underway with their first boundary.
The two teams lined up solemnly for a moment’s silence ahead of the national anthems, paying tribute to the victims of the tragic Air India plane crash that occurred last week in Ahmedabad. With heads bowed and a hush over the stadium, players and officials came together in a powerful gesture of respect and solidarity, honouring the lives lost in the heartbreaking incident.
Brydon Carse marks a significant milestone as he plays his first-ever Test match on home soil, with all five of his previous Test appearances coming in overseas conditions. In contrast, England’s talismanic all-rounder Ben Stokes adds another feather to his cap by featuring in his 50th home Test, underlining his enduring presence and impact in England’s red-ball setup.
Joe Root stands just two catches away from equalling the record for the most catches by a fielder in Test cricket.

India Playing XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, B Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj
England Playing XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir
Ben Stokes (England Captain): “We are gonna have a bowl. Headingley is a good cricket wicket. We have had a few good games here. We want to use the conditions early. It’s been a long time since we have played in June. We are all excited and ready to go.
We have had some lads playing County cricket, some lads had their bodies rested. We got the usual suspects in top 7. The bowling attack has Woaksey, Brydon, Josh Tongue, myself and Shoaib Bashir.”
Shubman Gill (India Captain): “We would have bowled first as well. It has been a dry summer. Great day. The sun is out. Looks like a good batting day for us. Preparation has been good. We have gone with 3 seamers, with Shardul in the team. Sai is making his debut. He will bat at 3. Karun is back.”
India will bat first against England in Leeds in the 1st Test with Sai Sudharsan, making his debut and will bat at no. 3.
“His challenge is not to let hands go when the length is not there to be driven. Play in the ‘V’, take nice stride on front foot and defend well – driving is just extension of that.”
Visuals show Sai Sudharsan being handed out Test cap by none other than Cheteshwar Pujara. Sudharasan could come to bat out at no. 3 with opening slot still up for grabs.
Today’s Test match starts off a new era for Indian cricket in Tests as after 5050 days, they will play the longer format of the game sans Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin & Rohit Sharma.
Headingley is usually known to be a ball-first track. Captains winning the toss could opt to bowl, given the overcast conditions and green track. The conditions could get better for the batters in the middle as the surface will get better by Day 2. Bowling first will be the ideal thing to do.
