Welcome to Sportstar’s HIGHLIGHTS from the first ODI between India and South Africa played at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday.
The full house at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi enjoyed three hours of Virat Kohli at his absolute best. It was vintage stuff – wristy flicks, charging at pacers, and straight drives from the Sachin Tendulkar playbook.
A mighty effort from the Proteas to stretch this till the final over after Harshit Rana’s opening burst had reduced the visitor to 11 for three. But Matthew Breetzke anchored the run chase and got some much needed help from Marco Jansen, who struck a fifty in 26 balls. But Kuldeep Yadav removed both batters in the same over to turn the tide in India’s favour. Corbin Bosch did not give up that easily, though. He too notched up a fifty but in the end, the ask proved too much. The result might have been slightly different had the SA top order fired.
SA needs 18 off 6. India will have only four fielders outside the circle due to slow over rate. Prasidh to bowl the final over.
The first ball is driven to long on, no run. OUT! Bosch gets a top edge and Rohit takes the catch at the edge of the circle.
Corbin Bosch c Rohit b Prasidh 67(51)
SA needs 27 off 12.
Arshdeep again. SIX! A slog sweep six for Bosch, gets it over backward square leg. SA needs 19 off 10 now.
Bosch almost chips the third delivery to long on on the third ball. No run taken. Arshdeep fires the fourth delivery wide of off, Bosch misses it.
Another wide yorker, Bosch tries to play it through the off side but cannot dig it out far enough. Arshdeep stops this and gets another dot ball.
A wide full toss on the final ball, Rohit gets a hand to it at cover and saves a certain boundary. But Bosch gets a single to keep strike.
Harshit Rana to Bosch, no run off the first ball as the batter drives to long off. FOUR! Rohit misfields at covers and lets a boundary for Bosch. SIX now! He tonks this length ball from outside off over long on.
A single on the fifth ball to keep the strike for the next over. Baartman sees out the final ball of the over.
Arshdeep gets Burger! A bouncer at the batter, who can only lob it up into the air with a vertical bat, makes for a simple catch for Rahul.
Nandre Burger c Rahul b Arshdeep 17(23)
Ottniel Baartman is the last batter.
Prasidh Krishna back into the attack. Two full tosses from Prasidh, both to Bosch and he misses out on both the chances. A good over from India’s perspective, just five runs from it.
Arshdeep targets the block hole consistently in this over, manages to execute fairly well. No boundary in that over, just seven off it including a wide.
Harshit to Bosch, FOUR, well wide of off and slashed away past covers. His slog off the fourth ball goes awry but lands short of the charging deep covers fielder, just one run.
Burger gets a boundary over midwicket on the final delivery, that also gets South Africa to 300 runs.
A SIX for Bosch against Jadeja. He gets one slightly short and picks this over deep midwicket.
Nandre Burger had picked a boundary in the last over off Harshit with a drive past mid off.
WICKET! Kuldeep has the last laugh! Subrayen tries one more slog sweep, gets a leading edge and Rahul gets under it to gather in his mits.
Prenelan Subrayen c Rahul b Kuldeep 17(16)
Nandre Burger at No. 10 for SA. He defends his first three balls at the crease.
Subrayen unfurls a booming slog sweep against Kuldeep to pick SIX runs. Nine runs from the over.
Bosch survives a DRS appeal. Jadeja fires this delivery quicker and Bosch is stuck on his back leg. But the UltraEdge shows a spike which saves him. He fires back promptly by sweeping a delivery on middle and leg through fine leg for FOUR.
Corbin Bosch with two pull shots for FOURs in the last two overs. He goes deep into his crease to pull short deliveries through midwicket.
Kuldeep strikes, the change in bowling works. Jansen sees the ball short and rocks back into his crease, but his heave ends up a miscue and he picks the deep midwicket fielder.
Marco Jansen c Jadeja b Kuldeep 70(39)
Another wicket! Breetzke falls too, done by the turn. He tries to hoist this length ball straight back but the turn sees him pick the long on fielder.
Matthew Breetzke c Kohli b Kuldeep 72(80)
Corbin Bosch and Prenelan Subrayen are the new batters.
Harshit Rana replaces Arshdeep. A tidy over from him, just four singles off it. The last delivery is a slower one, pitched at a short length, Breetzke places himself to pull it but it foxed by the lack of pace. The ball hits him on the helmet and he will have a concussion test.
Jadeja for his fourth over. FOUR! Jansen absolutely smacks this back at the bowler, Jadeja tries to get a hand to it over his head but this had too much venom behind it.
Seven runs from this over.
Arshdeep to continue after the drinks break. A full toss to Jansen, he tries to whack this down the ground but the bat turns in his hands, just one to long off. Breetzke gets a run on the fourth ball, tries to drive it but gets an under edge and as the ball dies down next to the stumps, the batters run a quick single.
FOUR! Short ball and Jansen pummels this through midwicket. FOUR more! This is outside off and Jansen chips this over covers.
Jadeja again. Virat Kohli with an athletic effort at covers to prevent a certain boundary off Jansen’s bat, gets a valuable dot ball for India.
FOUR! Breetzke uses the turn to loft this length delivery over covers. A single to follow.
PUT DOWN! Jansen fires back at Jadeja off his back foot but the bowler cannot grab it with his right hand. A single taken.
Arshdeep comes around the wicket to Breetzke. The second delivery is cut away with power, but there is a deep point in place to keep that down to just one run.
Jansen tries to pull from outside the off stump, gets a leading edge but it falls in no-man’s-land, one run taken. Breetzke taps the fourth through the off side, gets one. Arshdeep goes for a bouncer, bowls too high and it’s given a wide.
FOUR! Fifty for Jansen in 26 balls. A length ball around off, heaved through the on side to place it between deep midwicket and long on.
Jadeja back into the attack. He fires a delivery wide to Jansen, who tries to hit it hard, manages only a single to long off. Breetzke cuts to deep cover for one.
Jansen tries to slog across the line, gets it off the inside off his blade to deep midwicket for one. Breetzke picks one run off the final delivery to long off.
A full toss from Arshdeep, and Jansen lofts it past mid off for FOUR. Eight runs from this over.
Two SIXES for Jansen in this over from Prasidh. He reads a slower ball which pitches at a lengths, smacks it over deep midwicket. The second is off a fuller delivery, and lofted down the ground.
Back-to-back boundaries by Jansen to begin Kuldeep’s over. Using the long levers to sweep the wrist spinner. And now he takes the aerial route and goes into the midwicket stand for a six! 15 runs from the over.
Prasidh Krishna. Breetzke gets to his half-century with a lovely punch past the mid off fielder for four! Gets there in 55 balls. Lovely innings.
OUT! Brevis is gone. Harshit strikes again. Brevis went for a lofted off drive but loses power through the shot and is caught at deep cover point region. He goes for an entertaining 37 off 28 balls.
Marco Jansen in at number seven. Jansen is off the mark with a four off the first ball.
Harshit Rana is back. Brevis begins the over with a four and then proceeds to launch Rana way over the midwicket region for a huge six. A no-look shot that! Fantastic shot that.
Ravindra Jadeja into the attack and Dewald Brevis greets him with a huge six straight over the sight screen. Lovely strike that. Another six! This time he goes over long on. Tilak Varma was interested for a bit there but it went above him.
Breetzke continues to back his attacking instinct and pulls Prasidh Krishna over deep square leg region for a six. Nine runs from the over.
Kuldeep Yadav into the attack. An appeal for leg-before against de Zorzi but umpire doesn’t give it. Kuldeep seems convinced and KL Rahul takes the review. Three reds and he’s gone! Good review by the Indians. de Zorzi goes for 39 off 35 balls.
de Zorzi and Breetzke have done really well to continue to find boundaries regularly and keep the scoreboard ticking.
de Zorzi comes down the track vs Washington Sundar, gets an inside edge that goes past the keeper for four.
A maiden over to end the PowerPlay by Prasidh krishna. A terrific start for India but South Africa is looking to fightback.
Zorzi begins Harshit’s over with a four through the covers. So plenty of boundaries coming in now. Seven runs from the over.
Back-to-back boundaries for Breetzke and both through the cover! Lovely strokes both of them. Another boundary! This time goes on backfoot, opens the face of the bat and finds the boundary at the point region.
Harshit. Breetzke punches past the cover for four! Another boundary, an outside edge but runs nevertheless.
Arshdeep Singh. OUT! Markram is the next man to go. Length delivery outside off, Markram goes for the drive and gets an outside edge straight to the keeper.
Tony de Zorzi is off the mark with a lovely on drive for four.
A solid start for India, South Africa has gone into a shell with the two early strikes. Just three runs in the last couple of overs.
Harshit Rana. OUT! Cleans up Rickelton first ball! Around the wicket to left-hander and goes through the gate. A first-ball duck for Rickelton. India strikes early.
Quinton de Kock in at three. OUT! Harshit Rana strikes again and de Kock is caught behind. Driving length, went for it, and is gone. Two-ball duck.
Matthew Breetzke in at four.
Arshdeep Singh with a silly mid on in place. Right on the money on the first three deliveries, closer to off stump. First boundary off the innings as Markram drives through the over for four.
Indian players in a huddle. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton open the innings.
Bosch to bowl the final over. SA is behind on over rate and will have just four fielders outside the ring. The Proteas going with all their deep fielders on the on side.
WICKET! Jadeja picks the long on fielder off a full toss.
Ravindra Jadeja c Markram b Bosch 32(20)
BOWLED! Arshdeep’s off stump is uprooted by a yorker. Bosch is on a hat-trick.
Arshdeep Singh b Bosch 0(1)
Kuldeep Yadav on strike, he too gets a yorker but it hits the foot and runs down to fine leg, two runs taken. SA takes a review for a leg before even though the impact was clearly outside the line.
Jansen to bowl his final over. FOUR for Jadeja, slower ball outside off and he cuts it wide of the short cover fielder.
SIX! That is an outrageous shot from Rahul. Full and at the stumps and Rahul reverse ramps this over third man. OUT! Rahul tries to emulate it on the next ball but is caught behind.
KL Rahul c de Kock b Jansen 60(56)
Harshit Rana gets a couple to get off the mark.
Fifty for Rahul off just 50 balls. He gets it with a couple through square leg. The third is a full toss, Rahul hacks across the line but cannot get a boundary, just a single. A single for Jadeja to deep covers. Bosch fires in a yorker to Rahul, who is digs it out to the on side for one.
11 runs from this over from Jansen. It was going well with no boundary conceded till the last ball, but Jansen goes for a slower one, misses the line and sends it down leg and Jadeja gently helps this over short fine leg for FOUR.
Corbin Bosch to bowl the next.
Just two runs off the first three balls. But Bosch goes short to Jadeja and is pulled away over the fine-leg boundary for SIX!
Sloppy fielding from South Africa allows a third run on the last ball of the over. Bosch fails to collect the ball cleanly from long on and as the ball rolls away just a few yards away from him the Indian batters get the additional run.
Jansen to Rahul, SIX! Short and angling into the body, Rahul swivels and hooks this over fine leg. A single to deep covers on the second delivery.
A wide given outside off, India gets another extra. A yorker on the front leg to Jadeja, fends this to short fine leg and the batters complete a single.
SIX more for Rahul! Short and outside off and this is slapped over backward point. A single on the next gets India to 300. Jadeja picks a single to deep cover to finish this 17-run over.
Six singles and a wide in Baartman’s final over. He ends with 2/60 in his 10 overs.
Virat struggling with some back stiffness here. He is seen having a massage from the physio before the start of the over.
Burger to Kohli, a slower ball but Kohli pulls this towards deep square leg for a single. Rahul gets a bottom edge toward third man, gets a single off that. Burger attempts a slower bouncer, bowls it too high and gets given a wide.
The next is called wide outside off. OUT! Kohli falls on 135 off 120. A slower ball from Burger, outside off, Kohli tries to bludgeon this, slices this high into the sky and gets caught.
Virat Kohli c Rickelton b Burger 135(120)
Ravindra Jadeja off the mark with a single to deep midwicket.
Just two runs in the previous over from Nandre Burger. ICYMI, there will be just one ball in use for the last 16 overs of the innings.
Baartman now. FOUR! A slower ball from him, Rahul swings hard at it and gets enough bat on that to reach to the midwicket fence. Rahul cuts the fourth and gets a single.
Baartman back into the attack. FOUR for Kohli. Gives the bowler the charge and then whacks this past cover.
FOUR more! Full and straight, and Kohli lofts the fourth delivery back over the bowler’s head. A single to deep midwicket on the fifth delivery.
Kohli is switching gears now. Subrayen fires a silder at his pads, guides to the fine leg fence. He follows up with back-to-back sixes, first over cow corner and then a hit over long on.
On the final delivery, Kohli goes inside out over covers and gets another FOUR. That’s 21 runs off that over.
Virat Kohli completed his 83rd international century — 52nd in One-Day Internationals — during the India vs South Africa 1st ODI at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday.
Jansen to Rahul, a single to third man on the third ball. Kohli on strike at 99. Jansen bowls full and outside off, driven towards short cover, no run.
FOUR and that’s the 100 for Kohli. His third century at Ranchi, and 52nd in ODIs. Wide outside off, gently opens the bat face to nudge this past point. It goes well wide of third man too.

FOUR for Virat, and the Ranchi crowd finds its voice again. A fraction short from Jansen, Kohli gets on his toes to pummel this through midwicket. He is on 98 off 97 now.
The boundaries still eluding India. Virat Kohli is batting on 93 off 90 and has barely faced any deliveries in the last five overs. Rahul moves to 11 from 14 balls, and is doing well in at least keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Corbin Bosch again. Kohli gets a single to midwicket on the first ball. Rahul nudges the second to third man, this is a wide yorker, and gets a single. Another run for Kohli, parries this bouncer to third man.
FOUR on the final ball. Rahul looks to drive through covers, gets it off the inside half of the bat, bisects midwicket and mid on and runs away to the fence.
Baartman to Washington, at a hard length, Washington swings across the line, gets it through midwicket for two.
WICKET! Washington holes out at mid off. He tries to chip this over the fielder but Corbin Bosch times his jump to perfection to grab this. India losing momentum rapidly here.
Washington Sundar c Bosch b Baartman 13(19)
KL Rahul is the next batter in.
A lull in proceedings for India. The run rate has dropped since the two quick wickets. India has just 19 runs in the last five overs.
Washington has a couple of play-and-misses against Burger. But he uses the pace on the fifth ball, to upper cut it wide of third man and over the boundary. He gets off the mark with that shot. A single to deep covers on the final ball.
Gaikwad is GONE! A blinder from Dewald Brevis at point. A wide delivery from Baartman, outside off and Gaikwad goes for a square drive. Brevis leaps to his right and grabs this one-handed.
Ruturaj Gaikwad c Brevis b Baartman 8(14)
Washington Sundar is the new batter. A mixup with Kohli on just the second ball. He drives to mid on and wants a quick single. Kohli is ball watching. Washington has to scurry back and Markram slips while making the throw mid on, which sees him get back safe.
Nandre Burger bowls another over. He gives two singles, one each for Gaikwad and Kohli. A wide in that over makes it three from it.
Boundary after 27 deliveries. Kohli goes on backfoot against Subrayen and punches the ball towards cover for four.
Two quiet overs after Rohit’s dismissal. Ruturaj taking his time and strike rotation is now the modus operandi.
Jansen. OUT! Rohit Sharma is adjudged leg-before. Short of length, went for the pull but gets hit on the thigh pad on the back leg. Umpire gives it out and Rohit decides not to take the DRS. Ball kept a touch low there. He falls after scoring 57 off 51 balls.
Ruturaj Gaikwad in at four. He’s off the mark with a single.

Virat Kohli with a lovely straight drive against Burger. Pure timing that for four. Six runs from that over.
OUT! Burger has got Jaiswal caught behind. Skiddy delivery, closer to the off stump; Jaiswal looks to defend but gets a feather to the keeper.

Teams are lining up for the national anthems.
The South African off-spinner was impressive in South Africa A’s recent games against India A. The 32-year-old has recently made his Test and ODI debut.
Prenelan Subrayen reflects on a long wait for his Test and ODI caps, the India A challenge, and lessons from bowling to Rishabh Pant and other top players.
India: Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Washington Sundar, KL Rahul(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna
South Africa: Ryan Rickelton, Quinton de Kock(w), Aiden Markram(c), Matthew Breetzke, Tony de Zorzi, Dewald Brevis, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Prenelan Subrayen, Nandre Burger, Ottneil Baartman
South Africa wins toss and opts to bowl.
We’re less than 15 minutes away from the coin flip. The team winning the toss here should opt to bat first, given the results from the previous matches at this venue.
Rishabh Pant has found it hard to seal his place in the one-day outfit. KL Rahul has been India’s first-choice wicketkeeper since the 2023 World Cup. But Rahul said on match eve that if Pant gets into the eleven it would be as a keeper-batter. Can the multiple injuries in the side finally give a string of chances to Rishabh Pant?
With Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer ruled out of the series due to injuries, India has two slots to fill in its order. Yashasvi Jaiswal seems the natural pick to partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the order. For the No. 4 spot, India might turn to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was in a rich vein against South Africa A earlier this month.
The mindset of the modern South African cricketer is much evolved compared to his era, Ashwell Prince explained on Saturday ahead of India and South Africa's ODI series.
Stand-in captain K.L. Rahul admitted that the Indian team has struggled against spin, in the wake of the home Test defeats to New Zealand and South Africa.

India’s crippling loss in the Test series against South Africa will sting, for quite a while. Talk of wholesale personnel changes and systemic failures has only just begun, and the chatter is bound to get louder.
In the midst of crisis, the white-ball leg, which commences with the first ODI at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday, serves as temporary distraction.
