Jadeja beats Shai Hope with a tricky delivery, and India go up for a loud LBW shout. Hope shuffled across, but did he get outside the line of off-stump? Gill hesitates, KL at slip thinks he did, but India review.
UltraEdge shows no bat contact, and ball-tracking comes down to umpire’s call on both counts. NOT OUT stands, and India keep their review. Jadeja continues to probe, tossing it around off and keeping Hope pinned on the pads as he shuffles.
Jadeja gets some sharp turn, and Chanderpaul finds himself in a tangle, neither forward nor back, he tries to dab it, but the ball spins in, taking an under-edge and racing past off-stump. It even flies off his glove and nutmegs Jurel for FOUR.
Kuldeep keeps Athanaze under pressure. First, a floated delivery on off, and Athanaze gently blocks it to silly point for no run. Next, a flatter, short-of-length ball, and Athanaze nudges it back to Kuldeep, still no addition to the scoreboard.
Sundar starts his spell with Athanaze at the crease. First, a fullish delivery on off, and Athanaze pushes it to mid-off for no run. Next, Sundar fires one down leg, and Athanaze misses a lap sweep, Dhruv Jurel takes a tidy catch.
Tea on Day 2: India declared at 518/5 after a strong post-lunch session, with Shubman Gill reaching another Test hundred and Dhruv Jurel dismissed for 44. The bowlers had a short 50-minute spell, picking up one West Indies wicket. The visitors are still trailing, but Tagenarine Chanderpaul has begun confidently. The final session is up next.
Ravindra Jadeja breaks the opening stand as John Campbell departs for 10. Jadeja delivers a perfect ball, and Sai Sudharsan takes a sensational catch to send Campbell back. Early breakthrough for India, and West Indies lose their first wicket.
A solid start from Campbell, he leaves a good-length delivery wide outside off for no run, then clips the next one, angling into his pads, behind square on the on-side for a single.
Chanderpaul finds the fence as he cuts a slightly wide ball from Bumrah past third man for FOUR. On the next delivery, a half-shout for LBW fizzles out, Bumrah holds back as the ball jagged back into the left-hander, hitting him in front of middle and leg.
John Campbell and Chanderpaul take guard, with Campbell on strike. India’s spearhead Bumrah is ready to open the attack, supported by three slips and a gully. The players are back on the field, can the West Indies batters mount a stronger fight this time?
India declare after a commanding batting display. Jaiswal scored 175 before a run-out, while Gill reached his 10th Test century. Reddy and Jurel added brisk runs to take India past 500. Warrican was West Indies’ pick with three wickets, but spin hasn’t troubled much. Can WI fight back in their second innings?
Century for Captain Gill! What a knock, Shubman Gill brings up his 10th Test hundred, and his 5th as captain, with a calm cut off Khary Pierre. The ball’s short, Gill opens up and places it past cover for three runs. It’s been a classy, near-flawless innings, patient last evening, fluent today.
The Delhi crowd rises, Gill takes off his cap, raises his bat, and soaks in the applause. Dhruv Jurel joins in with a warm hug. Pure captain’s knock.
And we’re back with Jurel looking composed at the crease! He starts by glancing one drifting down leg for a couple to fine leg, then hangs back to a tighter one on off and taps it to backward point. Warrican tries to pull things back, but Jurel uses the crease beautifully next ball, rocks back and threads it past the infield for FOUR. Smart batting.
And we’re settling into the second session! Warrican keeps Jurel on his toe, first a shorter one on the stumps that’s jabbed to midwicket, then a fuller ball on off that Jurel drives straight to extra cover.
And we are into the second session! Warrican drifts one in on middle and leg, Jurel turns it to square leg and looks for a quick single, but Gill isn’t interested.
India came out with intent this morning but paid for it with a couple of wickets. In 26 overs, they added 109 runs. Jaiswal was run out early, adding just 2 to his overnight score. Captain Gill, far more positive than yesterday, reached his fifty off 95 balls.
Nitish Reddy, promoted up the order, entertained with some big shots but fell just 7 runs short of his fifty. West Indies were sharper today, creating more chances while leaking runs. The big question remains, will India declare if Gill reaches his hundred? Play resumes in 35 minutes.
Wicket! Nitish Reddy falls! Warrican finally gets his reward, Reddy goes after a delivery but can’t quite time it. Jayden Seales takes a sharp catch, and the 43-run cameo comes to an end. India lose a lively hitter at 43(54) with 4 fours and 2 sixes.
Nitish Reddy on fire! He starts with a huge SIX over long-on, crouching and launching Warrican’s flighted delivery into the stands. And he keeps the momentum, next ball, he drives it hard to deepish mid-off, but Phillip fumbles, letting it slip through his legs for FOUR. What a storming start from Reddy.
Gill is in imperious form this morning! Jayden Seales offers a slightly full delivery, and the Indian skipper doesn’t hesitate, he clips it crisply through midwicket, the ball racing to the fence. That’s FOUR and Gill’s second consecutive fifty.
After a cautious, defensive innings yesterday, he’s back with a flurry of boundaries, raising his bat to the roaring Delhi crowd. The captain is sending a clear message early on Day 2.
IND 371/3 (100.5)
Phillip opens up on Reddy, first ball, full and straight, no run. The next one’s short and high, Reddy sways away, and it’s called a wide.
Reddy off the mark in style. He swings hard at Seales’ pitched-up delivery, the outside edge flies past the diving second slip, and it races away to the fence. FOUR.
Gill keeps the scoreboard ticking. Anderson Phillip strays too wide, and Gill leans in to dispatch it through the covers. FOUR more, second boundary of the over.
New man in and straight into action. Nitish Kumar Reddy has faced just three balls and is already on FOUR, driving crisply through point. India’s back on the attack.
Big wicket for West Indies! Jayden Seales hurls one in, and Jaiswal is RUN OUT! Full delivery driven to mid-off, Jaiswal sets off immediately, but Gill wisely stays put. Too late, Jaiswal scrambles back, but Tevin Imlach is on the money, throws down the stumps. India cough up a huge wicket at 175/4 after 258 balls. Big moment, and Jaiswal looks annoyed with himself.
West Indies finish their huddle, Chase giving final instructions. Crowd cheers as Indian batters take the middle. Gill was all defense yesterday; will he change today? Second new ball in hand, can West Indies strike early? Anderson Phillip runs in over the wicket with two slips and a gully, Day 2 is underway.
Daren Ganga describes the track as looking like a 3rd or 4th-day pitch. Due to wear and tear, the surface is very dry but still good for batting. Spinners have an opportunity to exploit the rough areas, creating variable bounce, which could work in their favour if used wisely. The other end has more grass, so pacers can benefit from extra seam and pace. With a few bare patches, bowlers can expect some variability in bounce, making it a pitch that should keep both batsmen and bowlers engaged throughout the day.
IND vs WI Day 1 Highlights – India ended Day 1 in complete control at 318/2 after 90 overs, thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliant unbeaten 173. The young opener showcased remarkable composure, pacing his innings perfectly and frustrating the West Indies bowlers with his shot selection and patience.
Debutant Sai Sudharsan played a fluent 87, narrowly missing out on a maiden Test century, as the pair put together a vital 193-run partnership for the second wicket. KL Rahul contributed a promising 38 before Jomel Warrican struck to claim both early wickets.
Shubman Gill (20*) stayed unbeaten alongside Jaiswal as India closed the day strongly. On a low, slow pitch offering occasional turn, India’s batters capitalized on the conditions, leaving the visitors frustrated and well-placed to post a massive first-innings total on Day 2.
The India vs West Indies 2nd Test, Day 2 will be telecast on the Star Sports Network TV channels in India. It will be live streamed on the JioHotstar app and website in the country.
