    'Inspirational' Twickenham school shows why cutting sport funding is 'shot sighted' – Richmond & Twickenham Times

    Heathfield Junior School in Twickenham recently welcomed Munira Wilson MP during a girls’ cricket session.
    She was joined by Gary Palmer, head of programmes at London Sport and Bruno Black from Maiden Cricket.
    During her visit, Ms Wilson discussed the impact of the ending of Opening Schools Facilities funding with Mr Palmer and PE lead James Watson.
    Ms Wilson said: “James Watson and the whole team at Heathfield School are absolutely inspirational using cricket and other sports to transform young lives.
    “Cuts to sports funding in schools are so short sighted.”
    Heathfield Junior School has seen remarkable success in girls’ cricket, being crowned Surrey under-11 schools champions this year and becoming the first state school to win the Mason Cup, an indoor competition held at Lord’s.

    Six pupils recently attended Surrey trials for the under-10 and under-11 squads.
    Maiden Cricket has selected Heathfield as one of three partner schools to help promote girls’ cricket and will provide the school with a much needed girls kit.
    PE lead James Watson has also received recent recognition, winning the Sports Award at the Education and Business Awards and being named Coach of the Year at the Surrey CCC Cricket Collective Awards.
