The Boston Celtics barely lost Game 3 of their series against the Orlando Magic. Turnovers, off-nights, and controversial calls all built up in a two-point loss, destroying any chance of sweeping Orlando.
Another factor was that Jrue Holiday did not play, as he was absent because of a hamstring injury. The Celtics could have used Holiday’s ballhandling and playmaking in his absence, and he may have made all the difference, but that’s pure speculation.
What remains is whether or not Holiday will play in Game 4. Boston has not yet released an injury report for their next game. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla revealed the latest about Holiday on Saturday following their loss to the Magic.
Mazzulla’s update on Holiday health-wise was short but sweet while talking to reporters on Saturday.
“He’s doing well. He’s day-to-day,” Mazzulla said, per Bobby Krivitsky.
Game 3 marked the first time Holiday missed a playoff game since joining the Celtics. Since coming to Boston, Holiday hasn’t missed any extensive time, but he has missed a notable number of games. In the last two years, he’s missed 33 regular season games for Boston.
Even though Boston doesn’t consider Holiday a star like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, he still is an integral part of their success. During their title run in 2024, Holiday averaged 13.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists while shooting 50.3% from the field and 40.2% from three.
Holiday may be aging, but his reputation speaks for itself. For the Celtics to have any chance at repeating, they will need him.
