STEUBENVILLE — The game of baseball often comes down to which team takes advantage of its opportunities.
Tuesday evening at the Crimson Complex, visiting John Marshall had an opportunity to break things open in the third inning, and the Monarchs took advantage.
On the other side, host Big Red left nine guys on base and did not get any of its seven hits with runners in scoring position.
The end results was an 8-0 JM victory.
“It just comes down to we’re not ready to play,” Big Red head coach Fred Heatherington said. “Until we get ready to play, it’s going to be a long year. I think we have the guys that can turn it around, but we have to want to work for it.

“We’re just not playing Big Red baseball.”
After the Monarchs (5-2) had gotten a run each in the first and second innings, they plated five in the third to take complete control of things with a 7-0 lead.
Jacob Cisar had a two-run triple to get things going, then Kain Ankrom added an RBI single and Hayden Gaiser doubled in two more runs. All of the runs in the big inning were scored with two outs.
“We had some good at bats in the first couple innings, they gave us a couple (with errors) and good teams take advantage of that and we did that,” JM head coach Mark Cisar said. “We swung the bats well, we did some good things on the bases and our defense was pretty solid.
“We had a big chance there in the third inning and we took full advantage of it. We had some timely hits, put some things together and that inning was the difference in the game, really. We were able to bust things open a little bit with two outs.”

On the mound, Hayden Hughes scattered seven hits in going the distance for the Monarchs, striking out six and walking two. The defense behind him turned a couple double plays, including one in the seventh that recorded the final two outs.
“He threw great today,” coach Cisar said. “He did a good job, he hit a couple guys but that happens. He kept at it and had a good game.”
AJ Borsch came in the fourth for Big Red (0-3) and tossed three scoreless innings, striking out two without issuing a walk.
“He did a good job,” Heatherington said. “He threw well.”
Matt Fabbro had a pair of base hits for Big Red.
“We’re nowhere near where we want to be, hopefully we get to where we want to be,” Heatherington said. “We have a long way to go.”
