PHILIPSBURG — In what can only be described as a fitting narrative, amid a year plagued by blackouts and two consequential elections, a young talent from Cole Bay has stepped into the limelight, showcasing the national colors and bestowing a sense of pride upon the people of Sint Maarten.
Keacy Carty’s impact on West Indies cricket has been nothing short of monumental. He has etched his name in history as the first Sint Maartener to ascend into the senior West Indies squad, and he has done so in spectacular fashion. Making headlines, he became the fifth-fastest player from the West Indies to accomplish the feat of reaching 1,000 One Day International (ODI) runs, achieving this remarkable milestone in just 28 innings at an impressive average of 43.47.
Only behind him are notable cricketers such as Shimron Hetmyer, who also achieved this stunning milestone in the same number of innings. The record books show legendary figures like Gordon Greenidge, who reached it in just 23 innings, while Ramnaresh Sarwan and Nicholas Pooran mastered it in 27 innings each. Sir Vivian Richards still holds the title of the fastest to reach 1,000 runs, doing so in a remarkable 21 innings.
These extraordinary accomplishments have granted Carty the prestigious title of The Daily Herald’s 2024 Sports Person of the Year. But it’s not just his ODI records that warrant this honor; Carty’s achievements throughout the year have indeed been noteworthy.
Among the highlights was his Test debut on August 7 against South Africa in Trinidad, a milestone event in a cricketer’s career. Known for its rigorous five-day format, Test cricket remains the pinnacle of the sport, challenging players on mental, emotional, and physical fronts. Carty’s selection for the Test squad was a testament to his remarkable abilities.
During his debut, Carty faced significant pressure yet rose to the occasion, posting scores of 42 and 31 while batting in the crucial number three position, traditionally reserved for the finest batsman. With his team in a tight spot, he showcased his potential, surviving and then thriving alongside Alick Athanaze. CRICINFO accurately captured the moment, stating, “With Carty and (Alick) Athanaze at the crease, South Africa would have hoped to exploit their inexperience, but the young pair survived and then thrived.” The partnership blossomed, yet fate intervened when Carty’s innings was cut short by a low catch at cover.
By year’s end, his Test performances included scores of 42, 31, 29, and 17 against South Africa and 0, 3, 40, and 14 against Bangladesh, resulting in a Test batting average of 21.62.
Carty’s prowess was further illustrated in the ODI arena. He embarked on the year in Australia with the West Indies, starting off with a breathtaking 88 against the world champions, Australia. Alas, his maiden century slipped from his grasp due to a reckless call for a non-existent single that left him short and heartbroken as the team succumbed to an eight-wicket loss.
His following scores in that series were 40 and 10, encapsulating a challenging tour for the Caribbean side. In Sri Lanka, he contributed 37 runs in one match and did not bat in the third, as he found form in the latter half of the year.
His outstanding performance emerged against England on November 6, where he scored his inaugural ODI century—a brilliant 128 not out—leading his team to victory by eight wickets and sealing a chase of 263. The innings included 15 boundaries and two sixes and showcased his immense talent alongside a remarkable partnership of 209 runs.
Carty finished the year with scores of 19 not out, 71, 128 not out, 21, 45, and 95, reflecting an astonishing average of 94.75 in the latter half.
In the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), representing the four-time champions Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), Carty showcased his extraordinary skills once again, accumulating 246 runs in 10 matches at an average of 30.75. His highest score was an explosive 73 off just 35 balls against St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, featuring an impressive strike rate of 125.51, which highlighted his capacity to dominate any bowling attack.
Keiron Pollard, the captain of TKR, found himself outscored by Carty, as Pollard managed 235 runs from 11 innings, proving Carty’s caliber in a competitive environment.
Recognizing his impressive achievements, Cricket St. Maarten and its Chairman Imran Mc Sood Amjad honored Carty at an awards dinner on December 27. Amjad articulated, “Carty is not just a world-class cricketer representing the West Indies, but he embodies the spirit of St. Maarten. His journey serves as inspiration for the youth, demonstrating that hard work and perseverance can lead to great success.” He further commended Carty’s mental fortitude, saying, “He has excelled by understanding his strengths and displaying a commendable attitude while remaining humble and respectful to where he came from.”
The achievements of Keacy Carty resonate beyond cricket, capturing the aspirations of many as he continues to inspire and elevate the pride of Sint Maarten.
