The Kansas men’s golf team is headed to NCAA regional competition for the ninth straight season.
The Jayhawks learned on Wednesday afternoon that they will serve as the No. 8 seed in the 14-team regional based at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington, beginning on May 12.
This constitutes a team record for consecutive postseason appearances after KU made eight straight trips from 1989 to 1996 and, after a one-year absence, from 1998 to 2005.
“I don’t think about it each year, each year is different, but it says a lot about the program both past and current,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “When kids come here, they want to play in the postseason, and we’ve had a good run of luck here. Nine straight is a lot, and we are excited to go play.”
KU, which placed No. 44 in Tuesday’s national collegiate rankings, is coming off a season in which it won a team trophy for the first time in three years, doing so at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa in mid-April.
The Jayhawks are led by graduate student Gunnar Broin, with a stroke average of 70.72, and sophomore Will King, at 70.96, as each golfer has captured one individual title on the year.
The Bremerton Regional also includes, in seeding order, Arizona State, Florida, Utah, South Carolina, South Florida, Colorado, Charlotte, Colorado State, Kansas State, Elon, Coastal Carolina, Oral Roberts and Seattle.
Last year, KU placed 11th in regional competition in Rancho Santa Fe, California, concluding its season. The Jayhawks will need to play above their seed line in Bremerton in order to advance to the NCAA Championship, which begins on May 23 in Carlsbad, California; KU’s last trip to the NCAA Championship was in 2022.
Bermel said he has experience with this course from his past tenure at Colorado State.
“It’s a golf course where driving’s (at) a premium,” Bermel said. “… It’s a good test of golf. It’s got some risk/reward holes, and obviously we need to go out there and play well. You don’t have to play great, you just have to play well.”
