The Green Bay Packers extended their franchise building block, Zach Tom, on Monday ahead of their training camp. The deal will pay the former Wake Forest Demon Deacon a whopping $22 million a year on average over four seasons, making him one of the highest-paid players at his position.
When the Packers struck that deal, it has now created a countdown timer of sorts for the Bucs to get a deal done of their own with their right tackle, Luke Goedeke.
The Bucs' right tackle is set to be one of their more prominent free agents in 2026, and one of the more sought-after players if he hits the market for other teams to go after. Teaming up with Tristan Wirfs, Goedeke and the Bucs' All-Pro have formed one of the best tackle groups in the NFL.
Tom's extension, though, has created a new problem in the situation; as a whole, the market has now been reset.
The Bucs have a growing problem, which is a good one to have, in that they have several good, young players who will soon need extensions. As a result, their cap situation is getting tough, so every bit counts, and now Goedeke is likely to garner an extension somewhere in the neighborhood of $23-$25 million per year.
The Packers were wise to act fast; now the Bucs are left picking up the pieces. Meanwhile, Luke Goedeke will be reporting to Bucs training camp on Tuesday with a smile on his face, knowing the pay day that is coming his way.
