Manny Pacquiao rolled back the years to produce a legendary performance aged 46, yet was denied the legendary result that would have put yet another punctuation mark on an all-time great career.
Pacquiao appeared to build an early lead in his comeback, four years removed from his last fight, when he met the WBC welterweight world champion Mario Barrios in the MGM Grand Garden Arena ring in Las Vegas on Saturday, July 19.
From there, Pacquiao's speed, his ability to throw punches in bunches, and his pivoting, seemingly bamboozled Barrios, who appeared fazed by the moment, in front of 13,000 adoring fans. Barrios banked some of the rounds, and dictated the pace of the fight with his more cultured jab, but did not throw it enough, or as early and often as he should have.
It is an extraordinary achievement for Pacquiao to have even heard the final bell, but he was deserving of a win. Uncrowned scored the fight 116-113 in his favor, with some rounds difficult to score. The three official judges disagreed with the verdict, with one score of 115-113 in Barrios's favor overruled by two other judges who saw a 114-114 draw.
The result is a controversial one. "I thought I won the fight," Pacquiao said, adding that he believes he'll fight again, and perhaps even pursue a rematch. It's a do-over Barrios, who retains the world title as he did not lose, said "he'd love to do it again," while wearing a mask of bruises.
The Premier Boxing Champions card itself was a memorable one, with Sebastian Fundora forcing a corner's stoppage out of Tim Tszyu, after out-boxing him with varied punching and exquisite shot variety.
Pacquiao and Fundora's respective performances were not the only stand-outs from the electric card, though, as returning boxer Gary Russell Jr showed he still has some of the fastest hands the sport has ever seen as he belied his 37 years to punch Hugo Castaneda into a 10th-round stoppage.
