Patna: In a landmark move aimed at enhancing sports engagement among the youth in rural Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday initiated a groundbreaking project to establish 6,659 modern playgrounds across 5,671 panchayats. With an estimated budget of Rs 638 crore, this initiative will see the construction of three distinct types of sports facilities – large, medium, and small.
Focusing specifically on Patna district, plans are in place to develop 203 playgrounds within 177 village panchayats, all under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
The Chief Minister conducted a virtual launch of this extensive construction project from his official residence at 1, Anne Marg, overseeing efforts across 533 blocks within all 38 districts.
“With this development, we look forward to a surge in sports competitions, alongside creating numerous employment opportunities through the construction of these sports fields,” stated a release from the Chief Minister’s office.
The large playgrounds are set to span up to 4 acres and will be equipped for a variety of sports including cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, a running track, badminton, high jump, long jump, kabaddi, and kho-kho, customized according to local needs.
Meanwhile, the medium-sized fields, covering an area between 1 to 1.5 acres, will provide facilities for cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, running track, badminton, high jump, and long jump.
The smallest variant, consisting of fields less than one acre, will support basketball, volleyball, badminton, and feature a running track.
Chandrashekhar Singh, the district magistrate of Patna, confirmed that developing these 203 grounds will incur an estimated expenditure of Rs 19.14 crore. He elaborated, “In total, there will be 36 big grounds, 49 medium grounds, and 118 small ones. Specifically, 130 will be established in government schools, 72 on other government lands, and one on an engineering college campus.”
The initiative extends to Saran district, which is set to see the construction of 207 playgrounds across 180 panchayats, with an investment of Rs 18.73 crore. The Saran district administration highlighted that “Baniapur block is earmarked for the highest number with 20 playgrounds, while Dighwara will receive the least with only four.”
In Gaya district, a total of 275 grounds are proposed across 24 blocks, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 27.38 crore. This development will include 85 large, 115 medium, and 77 small playgrounds. Each of the 275 grounds will feature facilities for basketball and volleyball courts along with a running track, while provisions for high jump and long jump will be included in 122 each, 77 grounds will accommodate kabaddi, and 64 will be designed for kho-kho, as announced by the Information and Public Relations Department.
