New York Mets ace Kodai Senga (7-3, 1.47 ERA) has been a godsend for his team this season. The only problem is that the right-hander is not available right now.
Senga hasn’t pitched since June 12 due to a hamstring injury. The 32-year-old hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs across any of his 13 starts this year, but his absence has hurt the team recently.
New York has lost three straight and is 3-7 in its last 10 games. The squad’s struggles have cost it first place, as it now trails the Philadelphia Phillies by two games atop the NL East.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed an update about Senga on Tuesday, via SNY.
“Senga faced hitters on Sunday. So he had an up-and-down live BP, he’s scheduled to throw a bullpen tomorrow and do some PFP, and then we’ll see where we’re at after that bullpen,” he said. “But he already faced hitters on Sunday, so that’s a step in the right direction.”
Senga is still on the 15-day IL.
The 6-foot-1-inch, 202-pounder started hot as a rookie in 2023, going 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA over 29 starts. He then pitched just one regular season game in 2024 due to shoulder and calf ailments, but he went 0-1 with a 12.60 ERA over three playoff appearances.
The Mets’ bout with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday was postponed due to inclement weather. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Wednesday to make up for it, with the first game at 1:10 p.m. EST and the second at 7:10 p.m..
