The seventh-highest scoring team in Class 4A was honored accordingly on its all-conference squads.
The Marshalltown boys’ soccer team had four first-team honorees, five second-team picks and a pair of honorable mention selections on the season-ending all-Iowa Alliance Conference North Division teams.
Seniors Rafael Ortiz and Carter Bell garnered first-team honors alongside junior Aaron Ordaz Zambrano and sophomore Edgar Meraz.
It marked the second-straight first-team selection for Ordaz Zambrano as well as Ortiz, while Bell was promoted from last year’s second team.
Meraz, a defender, was Marshalltown’s only unanimous first-team selection as voted by the conference’s coaches.
Both Ordaz Zambrano and Ortiz finished the spring season with 13 goals, tying for 13th place in Class 4A. Bell, who played both midfielder and defender, contributed one goal while helping the Bobcats post five shutout wins as part of their 9-6-2 overall record. Meraz registered just two shots on goal while standing tall on the back line for the MHS defense.
Second-team honors went to senior forward Joel Ortiz, junior defender Jesus Maravilla Ordaz, junior goalkeeper Jonathan Nunez, sophomore midfielder Andres Ordaz Zambrano, and freshman defender Gavin Misek.
Joel Ortiz racked up seven goals and seven assists this spring, while Andres Ordaz Zambrano contributed five goals and nine assists. Misek had one goal and two assists in his debut season.
Nunez finished the season with 126 saves and an 80.3 save percentage. He and freshman teammate Giles Smith combined to stop 80.9 percent of the shots they faced this season, a ratio that ranked ninth among 4A clubs.
Marshalltown’s 62 goals scored this spring ranked them seventh in 4A, tying with Ames. The Little Cyclones won the Alliance’s North Division title with a 4-0-0 mark, while the Bobcats were second at 3-1-0.
MHS seniors Fabian Segovia and Luis Monge Jr. both received honorable mention selection. Segovia tallied three goals and three assists this spring, while Monge had six goals and five assists. Fifteen different players scored goals for the Bobcats this season.
