MARQUETTE — The women’s lacrosse team and several of its players from Northern Michigan University have been honored for academics by the Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.
The announcement made last week honored the Wildcats as a unit as an Academic Honor Squad, while five players earned Academic Honor Roll distinction, all for this past school year.
Nationwide, the IWLCA named 383 schools in NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA as Academic Honor Squads, which included 72 making it in Division II. Each posted a 3.2 or better grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
And there were 588 student-athletes from 84 schools specifically in Division II earning a spot on the Academic Honor Roll. That award came for juniors, seniors and graduate students having a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.
“Our athletes set a new bar for academic achievement this past year, earning one of our highest cumulative GPAs in program history,” said Northern head coach Lindsey (LeMay) Majkrzak, who oversaw her team earn a 3.43 cumulative GPA, in an NMU Sports Information news release about the awards. “The honor roll recipients, each in differing majors with differing challenges, earned that distinction with hours of hard work and dedication off of the field.
“I couldn’t be more proud of them, and our program as a whole, for their performance in the classroom.”
These are the Wildcats who earned a spot on the Academic Honor Roll, with their year, position, hometown and major:
    • Norah Bates; sr.; defense; Stillwater, Minn.; engineering technologies
    • Dayna Carlson; sr.; midfielder-defense; Champlin, Minn.; environmental studies & sustainability
    • Lindsey Locke; sr.; defense; Overland Park, Kan.; Spanish and international studies
    • Taylor Priestley; sr.; attack; Portland, Ore.; education
    • Mya Snyder; jr.; midfielder-defense; Lakeville, Minn.; exercise science
The NMU team earned the Academic Honor Squad recognition for the fourth consecutive and seventh overall time in its short history dating back to becoming a varsity sport at Northern in 2017.
It’s also the third straight season the Wildcats have produced at least five athletes making the Academic Honor Roll as Bates, Carlson, Locke and Priestley each earned their second straight honor.
