MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team has extended its streak to 18 years for being honored with a Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
This award is bestowed on teams that have at least a 3.30 grade-point average on a 4.00 scale.
The Wildcats’ long uninterrupted tenure receiving this award has only been matched by 10 other teams in NCAA Division II.
In all, a record 1,450 college and high school teams earned the award, and the AVCA specifically highlights programs receiving it for at least 15 consecutive years like NMU.
Two high school programs hold an extraordinary record of 33 straight years getting this honor, Jonesboro (Arkansas) and Ross S. Sterling in Baytown, Texas.
The longest current streak for an NCAA Division II team, the Wildcats’ division, is 23 years by Wayne State of Nebraska.
