MARQUETTE — The women’s soccer team at Northern Michigan University closes out the NMU Soccer Field part of its regular season today and Sunday with conference games that could go a long way toward seeding in the upcoming league tournament.
The Wildcats are in sixth place in the nine-team Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 11 points, sporting 3-7-5 overall and 3-6-2 conference records.
NMU hosts last-place Roosevelt (4-8-1, 2-7-1 GLIAC) at 11 a.m. today, then entertains second-place Wisconsin-Parkside (7-5-2, 7-2-1) at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Fans can follow @NMU_wsoc on Instagram and @NMU_wsoccer on X (formerly Twitter) for updates leading up to and during matches, or visit the NMU athletics website at nmuwildcats.com and look under the women’s soccer schedule for links to live video, live statistics and a preview.
With the home schedule coming to a close, before Sunday’s game will be Senior Day as the team honors Hannah Kastamo, Addison Wargo, Kenna Alexander, Jillian Thompson and Olivia Moreno.
Last week on the road, Northern picked up just one point of a possible six, losing at league-leading and national No. 5 Grand Valley State 3-0, then tying fourth-place Ferris State 2-2.
Because of that, the Wildcats haven’t sown up a top-eight finish in the GLIAC quite yet, only leading Michigan Tech and Roosevelt by four points each. Eight teams qualify for the league tourney starting on Nov. 11.
In last Friday’s game, NMU played national powerhouse Grand Valley to a scoreless tie for nearly all the first half. But the Lakers (11-2, 7-1) scored twice in the final seven minutes before intermission, adding another goal near the midpoint of the second half.
GVSU held advantages of 14-7 in total shots and 5-2 in shots on goal, also preventing the Wildcats from getting any corner kicks. NMU netminder Thompson had two saves as did the Lakers’ Macie Hunter. Gretchen Ellis was the only Northern player to get off two shots as she and Ava Buhlman each had a shot on goal.
Then against Ferris on Sunday, Alexander opened the scoring in the 11th minute before the Bulldogs answered with a pair of goals later in the first half for their 2-1 lead at intermission. But NMU’s Madison Bilbia came through with just over seven minutes remaining, taking a corner kick from Alexander, to forge the tie. Marena Maceroni assisted on the first goal.
“Our seniors have been great,” Northern head coach Erin Egolf said in an NMU Sports Information news release previewing this weekend. “They’ve made a huge impact on this program, and we want to do right by them this weekend.
“I think there’s always an intensity about our team to want to go out and perform well, and with senior weekend added on top of that, I can’t wait to see what that looks like.”
