Northwest PPG–14.4, PPA–39.4; YPG–199.8
Northwest notes: Northwest (2-7) is trying to close its season on a high. A young squad, the Rangers won two straight games at midseason, outscoring those teams, 96-18, but have struggled since. The Rangers are one of three Class A teams who opted out of the District 4 Class A semifinals, leaving top-seeded Line Mountain a bye into the championship. Sophomore running back Shane Hempel has had a strong season and gives the Rangers hope for a promising future, running for 654 yards and seven touchdowns, while averaging 8.8 yards per carry. He went over 100 yards in both wins. Loegan Diltz has added 253 yards and four touchdowns. The passing game, however, has struggled and Northwest has been shutout four times. Mason Bilby has intercepted three passes and Colton Smith is another exciting sophomore, making 10 tackles for loss.
Northwest Player to watch–Ben Bonham: The junior linebacker ignites the defense and has made a team-high 60 tackles. He also has two interceptions, a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Bonham made a career-high 16 tackles in the season opener against Canton.
South PPG–30.0, PPA–22.4; YPG–329.6, YPA–244.3
South notes: South (5-4) has all but sealed a 14th straight district playoff berth and is mostly fighting for seeding tonight. The Mounties enter at No. 7 and are trying to pass either Wellsboro and/or Loyalsock for higher spots. Either way, they will open on the road in next week’s District 4 Class AA quarterfinals and head to either Warrior Run, Troy or Bloomsburg depending on how the final seedings shake out. South needs a win tonight and a Cowanesque Valley upset against Montgomery to earn a share of the NTL-II championship. Montgomery snapped South’s four-game winning streak a week ago. Before that, the Mounties scored at least 28 points in each of those wins. The Mounties also erased a six-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Muncy, 28-20. Sophomore running back Cade Lusk went over 1,000 yards a week ago, the 12th time in 14 seasons that South has produced a 1,000-yard rusher. Garrett Lorson and Eli White also are having good seasons and have 100-yard games this year. Quarterback Cole Gerber has gone over 1,000 yards passing and Levi Butler leads the area with 50 catches. He joins Dylan Scheller from last year as the only South receivers catch 50 passes in a season during the 2000s. Lorson has intercepted three passes, as has fellow freshman Samir Moy and freshman Taylor Naugle has a team-high four.
South Player to watch–Eli Harvey: One of the team’s few seniors, Harvey will play his final home game tonight and has been a vital contributor for a team which has built on its winning tradition. His blocking has been crucial to South featuring one of the area’s most productive offenses and he especially stood out in the Muncy victory, helping three runners gain 60 or more yards.
Outlook: Northwest plays hard, but if South is focused, it should win this one fairly big and build momentum entering next week’s playoff road game. And so many young players gaining that playoff experience will be another positive step for a program with a bright future.
