Blue Earth’s Cody Sukalski slides safely into second base during the Pirates’ 14-8 victory over Austin on June 13. The Pirates also defeated North Mankato and Waseca during the last week.
Blue Earth’s Brandyn Olsen pitched eight innings of shutout baseball and the Pirates won their third game in a row when they traveled to Waseca on June 18 and defeated the Braves 11-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, Zac Schonrock stroked a double to left field to drive in Hunter Bleess and Logan O’Hara with the only runs the Pirates would need. Schonrock scored later in the inning on a single by Tanner Nawrocki.
Blue Earth added three more runs in the top of the eighth inning and five in the ninth inning to account for their 11-run total.
The Pirates pounded out 19 hits in the game and many of their batters had a good game at the plate.
Hunter Bleess went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in, Parker Meyers was 4-for-6 with two runs batted in, Olsen was 2-for-3 while driving in three runs, O’Hara was 3-for-6 and Schonrock finished with three runs batted in while getting two hits in six plate appearances.
Blue Earth batters had a total of six doubles including two each by Bleess and Meyers.
Olsen only gave up two hits in his eight innings of work. He struck out 12 batters and only walked two.
Kade Hobbs pitched the ninth inning for the Pirates and walked one batter and struck out one.
The Pirates are scheduled to travel to Austin to take on the Greyhounds on Friday, June 23. They are scheduled to host the Waterville Indians at Veterans Field in Blue Earth on June 25.
Pirates 13, Gators 8
Blue Earth’s Zac Schonrock singled twice and hit a home run to drive in three runs while Parker Meyers singled once and had two doubles to knock in two runs to help lead the Pirates to a 13-8 victory over the North Mankato Gators in a 13/60 League baseball game on Sunday, June 15.
Playing on their home turf at Veterans Field, the Pirates fell behind early when the Gators scored three runs in the top of the first inning.
North Mankato’s lead did not last long. In the bottom of the second inning, walks to Logan O’Hara and Kaylan Legred were sandwiched around a single by Schonrock to load the bases with one out. Brayden Barnett’s line drive single to center field brought home O’Hara and Schonrock with Blue Earth’s first two runs of the game.
Talan Priester was hit by a pitch to fill the bases again. A single by Meyers drove in Legred to tie the game at 3-3.
A single run in the bottom of the third inning gave the Pirates a 4-3 lead. Ryan Madetzke led off the bottom of the third inning with a walk. An error on a ground ball hit by O’Hara put runners on first and second base and a single by Schonrock to left field plated Madetzke with Blue Earth’s fourth run of the day.
The Gators regained the lead at 5-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning but the Pirates tied things up in the bottom of the inning.
Meyers got things started in Blue Earth’s half of the inning with a lead-off double. A walk to Brandyn Olsen and a single by Hunter Bleess put Pirates on every base. Meyers then scored on a fly ball to center field by Madetzke to make the score 5-5.
A five-run fifth inning gave the hometown team some breathing room with a 10-5 advantage over North Mankato.
Schonrock walked and Legred was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Both runners moved up a base after pulling off a double steal.
A single by Barnett brought Schonrock home with the Pirates’ sixth run of the game with Legred checking in at third base.
Priester’s ground ball was misplayed for an error which allowed Legred to score and Barnett to advance to second base. Both runners advanced a base on an error by the Gator’s first baseman. A passed ball allowed Barnett to score and Priester to move up to third base. A double by Meyers drove in Priester with the Pirates’ ninth run of the contest and a single by Bleess let Meyers cross home plate and increase Blue Earth’s lead to10-5.
North Mankato added two runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut Blue Earth’s lead to 10-7 but the Pirates tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to boost their advantage to 13-7.
Olsen walked to start things off for Blue Earth and pinch runner Noah Barnett stole second base. A two-out single by O’Hara brought Barnett around with the Pirates’ 11th run of the game. Schonrock’s two-run homer completed Blue Earth’s scoring for the game.
North Mankato tallied one more run in the top of the eighth inning to make the final score 13-8 in favor of Blue Earth.
In addition to Schonrock and Meyers, Bleess and Brayden Barnett also had multiple-hit games with each player recording two hits.
Logan Jahnke started on the mound for the Pirates and worked four complete innings. He was charged with five runs, only two earned, on six hits. He walked two batters and struck out one.
Cody Sukalski picked up the win after hurling four innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits. He issued one walk and had four strikeouts.
Schonrock pitched the last inning and held the Gators scoreless. He gave up no hits and struck out one batter.
Pirates 14, Greyhounds 8
The host Blue Earth Pirates built an early 11-2 lead during the first five innings of their game against the Austin Greyhounds at Veterans Field on June 13, and then withstood a Greyhounds rally to hold on for a 14-8 victory.
The Pirates were led by Brandyn Olsen who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a homer and a double for six runs batted in.
Blue Earth scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, four in the second, two in the fourth and three in the fifth inning while holding Austin to single runs in the second and third innings to take an 11-2 lead through five innings.
The Greyhounds cut the Pirates’ lead to 11-7 when they pushed five runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning.
Blue Earth countered with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning and two runs in the eighth inning while limiting Austin to just one more run in the top of the eighth inning for the 14-8 victory.
Olsen’s home run in the bottom of the first came after Cody Sukalski had reached first base on a fielder’s choice and gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Olsen’s bases-loaded double to right field drove in Sukalski, Brayden Barnett and Talan Priester and put Blue Earth on top 5-0. Olsen drove in his sixth run of the game when his grounder in the bottom of the fifth inning drove in Priester who had reached base on a walk and advanced to third base on a single by Sukalski.
Ryan Madetzke also had a good day at the plate with three hits in five at-bats. He drove in three runs.
Kade Hobbs started on the mound for Blue Earth and picked up the win after pitching six and one third innings. The right-hander yielded six hits and seven runs (six earned) while walking three batters and striking out three.
Kaylan Legred pitched two and two thirds innings and was charged with one earned run on one hit. He walked a batter and struck out three.
Parker Eichenberger pitched the ninth inning. He did not give up a run while holding the Greyhounds hitless. He recorded two strikeouts.
The Wells Wildcats bested the Morristown Morries 7-6 on Wednesday, June 11, after taking the lead late in the game. …
