Pakistan cricket is never short of surprises and entertainment. The players and coaches were lambasted after the team’s first-round exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Former Pakistan Test head coach Jason Gillespie called the current head of the support staff, Aaqib Javed, a clown. He accused the former Pakistan pacer of working against him and the former white-ball coach Gary Kristen to remove them from the set-up in Pakistan cricket.
The PCB hired Gillespie and Kirsten to improve the team’s performance, but the duo left after a few months. Aaqib defended Pakistan’s early exit from the Champions Trophy. “We have changed 16 coaches and 26 selectors in the last two-and-a-half years. If another team had followed the same model, their performance would have been the same,” he said.
Gillespie was blunt in his reply. “Aaqib was working against me and Gary behind the scenes to become coach across formats. He is a clown,” he said.
Former Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur called it a jungle. He was associated with the Men in Green for several years.
“I love what Jason Gillespie said. He is a wonderful coach. Pakistan cricket is shooting itself in the foot. It is its worst enemy. They have good players, who can be match-winners but the situation is chaotic. It is sad to see. I thought PCB did the right thing when they brought Gillespie and Kirsten on board,” Arthur told talkSport.
However, the situation worsened when Mohammad Rizwan replaced Babar Azam as captain, Shadab Khan was removed from the team, and Shaheen Afridi lost his wicket-taking ability.
“Pakistan had good coaches who could have taken the team forward in international cricket. But there is a lobby in Pakistan that keeps undermining, and agendas are leaked to the media. I feel sorry for Jason and Fary. Pakistan cricket is like a jungle. I do no doubt that Gary and Jason were not treated fairly,” he added.
