‘People Might Not Even Miss Rohit’: Aakash Chopra’s Bold Statement About India’s ODI Future – Cricket.com

India are moving fast towards a full generational transition in ODI cricket with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli unsure to play the 2027 ODI World Cup, as the team will continue to assess their performance and take a call on their future.
The good thing for Indian cricket here is that the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal are just warming the bench in this format, who can always step in and make the opening spot their own, just like Rohit did back in 2013. Experts like Aakash Chopra have already started showing their support for Jaiswal and have affirmed that the spot is his to take once Rohit calls it a day. He even went to show so much confidence in Jaiswal’s ability that he remarked that fans might not even miss Rohit at the top.
“It’s just a question of when, not if (On Jaiswal playing). Yashasvi will play across formats very soon,” former Indian opener Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
“He’s already impressed in T20Is and scored a century too. He’s been consistent in the IPL and was part of the T20 World Cup squad. After that, Shubman Gill moved ahead due to leadership responsibilities. Gill became part of the Asia Cup side, but Yashasvi’s turn will come. You can’t keep him waiting for long. There’s talk about Abhishek Sharma’s inclusion in ODIs, but I think Yashasvi should get his chance first. If he opens with Gill, people might not even miss Rohit,” he added.
“Whenever Yashasvi gets an opportunity, he makes the most of it. Once he cements his spot, you won’t miss others. By the next World Cup, he’ll likely be a regular starter in the XI,” he concluded.
While Jaiswal is only regular in Test cricket for India so far, he has been selected in ODI and T20I sides as the backup opener.
