Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber Free Agency Plan Has Bad News Written All Over It After Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Philadelphia Phillies must be cautious not to do things that come back to haunt them. With Kyle Schwarber hitting free agency at the end of the season, there doesn’t seem to be much of a reason to continue letting questions arise.
Schwarber is one of the better power hitters in Major League Baseball and has been one of the top players in the Phillies’ lineup ever since he landed with them during the 2022 campaign.
But according to a recent report from The Athletic, that’s exactly what it sounds like will happen. The Athletic reported that the Phillies will likely let him test the free agency market and then attempt to match his offer.
“I do not believe anything has changed since spring training,” Gelb wrote. “From Schwarber’s perspective, he wants to bet on himself this close to reaching free agency. Fair. And, from the Phillies’ perspective, they want to see how many clubs are interested in a DH who will be 33 next season. As good as Schwarber is — on and off the field — it’s a profile that hasn’t generated a ton of demand in recent years.”
“My feeling is the Phillies will let the market for Schwarber develop, then match it,” he predicted.
Hopefully, the front office is smart enough to let Schwarber know their plans.
If they want to let him go out on the market, find a deal, and come back to them, that’s fair.
However, there have also been incidents in recent years where players feel disrespected by that, and it’s tough to blame them.
The last thing they want to do is lose him because of a few million dollars, so if they have a price in mind, just offer it now.
