MUNISING — The Pictured Rocks Road Race celebrates its 50th running on Sunday, June 29, drawing runners from across this state and others.
The half marathon and 10-kilometer courses wind through Munising and along the Lake Superior shoreline, offering one of the most scenic racing experiences in the Midwest.
What began in 1976 as a local road race has grown into a signature summer tradition, celebrating not just endurance, but community.
“This race isn’t just about the miles, it’s about the people who make it happen,” race organizer Rhonda Lassila said. “From the volunteers to the families cheering on the sidewalk, everyone plays a part in making this day special.
“And reaching the 50-year mark? That’s something worth running for.”
To mark the milestone, this year’s event includes custom finisher awards made from locally sourced stone — each one unique, just like the runners who earn them. The PRRR has never been about flash; it’s about heart, hustle and hometown grit.
The Munising Visitors Bureau, this year’s title sponsor, has played a key role in helping the race grow and draw visitors from across the region.
“Events like the Pictured Rocks Road Race are part of what makes Munising shine,” said Executive Director Cori Cearley. “People come for the race, but they stay to explore our trails, waterfalls and lake views. It’s an authentic U.P. experience, and it helps support our local businesses too.”
Races start and finish at Bayshore Park, located at 355 Elm Ave. in Munising. Routes include a mix of paved roads and forested two-tracks, with about three miles of dirt trail on the half marathon course.
Registration closes on Wednesday, June 25. The half-marathon, with an entry fee of $75, starts at 8 a.m., and the 10K run and 10K walk each have an entry fee of $65 and start at 8:30 a.m.
Packet pickup will be held the day before the race on June 28 from 3 to 6 p.m. at East Channel’s Connection (Superior Street location) with live music and food available. Day-of- pickup opens at 7 a.m. at Bayshore Park.
