Duluth Denfeld’s first trip to the state boys soccer tournament ended at the hands of the team that defeated them in their last (2018) one, Blake, as the Bears ran off 5-0 winners in a Class AA quarterfinal on Tuesday night at White Bear Lake.
The Hunters kept the game under control well past the 20-minute mark but top-seeded Blake broke though with about 14 minutes remaining in the half after Theo Farazi sprung Landon Bell, a state Mr. Soccer finalist, down the left flank. Bell crossed to Oliver Brown for the opener.

A few minutes later Bell made it 2-0 after a deflection appeared to wrong-foot Denfeld keeper Logan Bradford. James Lewis made it 3-0 after dribbling through traffic and firing from the goalkeeper’s right.
Sam Eklund hit a long shot across the face of the goal late in the first half, but otherwise, most of the traffic on a windy night was headed in Blake’s direction, as the Bears had seven corner kicks in the first half alone. Bell and Lewis finished with two goals apiece for Blake, which will face Northfield or Sartell in a state semifinal on Oct. 28.
The Hunters finish their season 9-8-3. Bradford finished with five saves for the Hunters.
The underdog Thunderhawks held strong into the second half, but an opportunistic goal put the Zephyrs in front to stay in a Class AA state quarterfinal on Tuesday night in Forest Lake.
A Mahtomedi corner kick was just a little too tall for Rapids keeper Rylee Major to reach and the ball tipped off her fingers right into the path of Lucy Peer. A few minutes later, the Zephyrs made it 2-0 after an Anneliese Ulschmid shot took a big deflection into the goal.
A fourth-quarter touchdown run by Mikko Boben and subsequent extra-point kick from Evan Abate allowed Hibbing to spring a significant upset in a Section 7AAA quarterfinal in Two Harbors on Tuesday night.
The Agates, who won the first meeting between the two 28-12 in Hibbing in September, jumped out to an early lead on short first-quarter touchdown runs by Junior Lucero and Tommy DeChantal, but could not add to that with kicker Zach Johnson out due to injury. They carried that lead into the half, but Connor Heaten broke a 52-yard run in the third quarter to get the Bluejackets back within a score, and then Boben tied it up in the fourth quarter.

Abate tacked on the extra point, which proved to be enough to send Hibbing to a section semifinal at Pequot Lakes on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Mesabi Tribune’s Gary Giombetti, it’s the Bluejackets’ first playoff win in 22 years.
The Greyhounds didn’t have an answer for the St. Francis passing attack in a Section 7AAAAA quarterfinal road loss on Tuesday night.
Saints quarterback Tanner Rothbauer threw for three touchdown passes in the first quarter and a half as the hosts took control of the game, taking a 27-0 edge into halftime.
Quarterback Isaac Emerson had a 30-yard run for a consolation touchdown in the fourth quarter for East, which finishes its season 3-6.
Zeke Stuber had three touchdown runs and 135 yards on the ground as the Titans moved on with a home win in the Section 7AA playoffs on Tuesday night at Angelo Taddie Field in Nashwauk.
The Titans scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to take advantage, two of them coming from Simeon Wells on a 1-yard dive and a 60-yard interception return.

Landon Mathison caught two touchdown passes from Nick Murray in the second half for the Giants, who finish 3-6.
GNK (4-5) will play at Moose Lake/Willow River in a 7AA semifinal on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines got dominant performances from their top three singles players and pulled off a 4-3 victory over Fergus Falls in the quarterfinals of the State AA girls tennis tournament at Life Time Bloomington South on Tuesday.
Starting at the top, junior Mayme Scott rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles, with Ellie Dimberio, an eighth-grader, only slightly less dominant at No. 2, with a 6-2, 6-1 win over a senior from Fergus Falls. No. 3 Alice Johnson also beat an older player in her match, 6-2, 6-2.
With Fergus Falls winning at No. 4 singles, a fourth point for the Wolverines was needed from the doubles and was tougher to come by. All three doubles matches went the full three sets, with Fergus Falls winning at No. 2 in a third-set tiebreaker. However, Ayla Troutwine and Mattelyn Seppi outlasted Ashtyn Lill and Ruby Ellison 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Fourth-seeded Rock Ridge will face top seed Mahtomedi in the state semifinals on Wednesday morning, with either a third-place match or the state championship to take place in the afternoon against Hill-Murray or Blake.
