President Trump bans transgender athletes from women's sports, MSU's response unclear – The State News

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed the “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” executive order, restricting transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports.
The order states it will “rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities,” and includes public institutions such as Michigan State University.
In an official statement sent to The State News, MSU Communications responded to the executive orders. “The President, in conjunction with the Government Relations Office, has created four Rapid Response Teams that are evaluating the various executive orders as they come out from the federal government,” MSU Chief Communications Officer Emily Guerrant said.
In October, MSU spokesperson Mark Bullion declined to confirm whether any transgender athletes currently compete in MSU athletics.
Digital storytelling freshman Charles Lutz expressed uncertainty about the effect the executive order will have on campus.
“I’m not too sure how much of an effect it’s going to have,” Lutz said. “I’m sure it will in the future but not as of now.”
On Jan. 24, MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz emailed students and faculty, expressing “strong concerns” over policy changes under the Trump administration. He stated that MSU will create rapid-response teams to assess their impact.
A day after President Trump’s order, the NCAA updated its transgender athlete policy, restricting participation to an athlete’s assigned gender at birth.
Neuroscience senior Sophia Spencer also expressed her thoughts on the executive actions of the President.
“The (transgender) ban will have little to no effect within the sports because it was a ban of nothing,” Spencer said. “I feel like it will affect students on campus going forward.”
The State News reached out to MSU for further comment but received no response.
