Team India suffered a dramatic collapse in Guwahati against South Africa to lose the two-match Test series 0-2, thus recording only their third whitewash at home and second within the space of the last 12 months. Under the leadership of standby captain Rishabh Pant, India lost the decider by 408 runs, their biggest-ever margin of defeat in their near century-old history of playing Test cricket.
Reflecting on the emotional impact of India’s crushing defeat, captain Pant has now vowed a stronger comeback as he apologized the nation for team’s shambolic performances over the last couple of weeks.
Taking to X on Thursday, November 27, i.e., a day after India’s shambolic 408-run defeat to South Africa, interim captain Rishabh Pant admitted his team’s shortcomings, as he apologized to the nation for “not living up to the expectations”. He said:
“There is no shying away from the fact that we didn’t play good enough cricket over the last two weeks. As a team and as individuals, we always want to perform at the highest level and bring smiles to billions of Indians. Sorry we couldn’t live up to expectations this time, but sport teaches you to learn, adapt and grow – both as a team and as individuals.”
Rishabh Pant also vowed a strong comeback for the Indian cricket team, and thanked the Indian cricket fans for their continuous love and support. He added:
“Representing India is the greatest honour of our lives. We know what this team is capable of and we will work hard, regroup, refocus and reset to come back stronger and better as a team and individuals. Thank you for your unwavering support and love! Jai Hind.”
After falling 30 runs short in the low-scoring series opener at the Eden Gardens earlier this month, Team India was tasked to chase down 549 with a day and an hour to spare in Guwahati. However, the Indian line-up crumbled out for just 140 to lose the match by 408 runs, and the series 0-2.
The Indian team will now face South Africa in a three-match ODI series starting November 30 next week.
