As the golf world gears up for Bethpage Black this September, the United States Ryder Cup team has signaled its intentions by officially naming world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler as its first automatic qualifier for the 45th edition of the competition.
The 2025 Ryder Cup will be contested from Sept. 25-28 at the notoriously challenging Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, New York, where Team USA, captained by Keegan Bradley, aims to reclaim the Cup from Europe, which triumphed at Marco Simone in 2023.
The Ryder Cup USA X account honored the moment with a celebratory video montage of Scheffler’s recent victories and Ryder Cup highlights captioned, “Major Champion. Gold Medalist. Ryder Cup Winner. 🏆#GoUSA.”
Scheffler’s status as the first automatic qualifier did not come as a surprise, securing his spot by winning the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village on Sunday.
The win marked Scheffler’s third PGA Tour win of the season and his 16th career Tour title. It also made him only the second player since Tiger Woods to defend his Memorial title, following Woods’ run from 1999 to 2001.
Scheffler recorded his first victory of the 2025 PGA Tour at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May, winning by eight strokes over Erik van Rooyen with a 31-under-par 253, tying the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record.
Two weeks later, he dismantled the field at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club, shooting an 11-under 273 to capture his third major title by five strokes.
The win made Scheffler the first player since Seve Ballesteros to win his first three majors by three or more strokes and placed him alongside Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as one of only three golfers since 1950 to win at least 15 PGA Tour events before turning 29.
