The storied Saint John’s football program showed St. Scholastica more than a few things but the Saints didn’t come out of Saturday’s 70-21 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup without a few high points.
For one, CSS’s 21 points were the most any team has scored on the 10th-ranked Johnnies all season, albeit they all came in the second half when the hosts were up 49-0.

Donald West threw touchdown passes to Andrew Burgess, Teagen Lubinski and Nathan Behrens as the Saints outscored the Johnnies 14-7 in the third quarter and added another touchdown in the first minute of the fourth.
West was 15-for-33 passing for 165 yards. He was also CSS’s leading rusher on a tough day to move the ball on the ground. The Johnnies outgained the Saints 550-228 and 177-63 rushing.

St. Scholastica ended up with a bad opponent to try and get a critical result from, as a 3-0 (25-22, 31-29, 25-19) sweep by undefeated conference champion St. Olaf plus adverse results elsewhere caused the Saints to miss the MIAC tournament on a tiebreaker.
CSS hit a decent .197 on Saturday at Reif Gym in Duluth, but St. Olaf piled up 50 kills in just three sets on a .256 hitting percentage, and the Oles had twice as many aces and blocks.
Lindsey Baribeau finished with 13 kills and three blocks for CSS, while Cassidy Lustig led all players with 19 digs.
CSS (14-13, 5-6 MIAC) finished tied with Augsburg for the sixth and final MIAC playoff spot, which went to the Auggies by virtue of a four-set head-to-head win in Minneapolis in late September after they swept Saint Mary’s in the regular-season finale.

UWRF’s Kailey Niccum broke that tie about three minutes later and the Falcons, who had all four of the game’s power plays, including two in the last 10 minutes, held on for the win.
Makenzie Cole made 38 saves for CSS, which was outshot 42-7.
