Lifeline of Cricket
Legendary Australia cricketer Ricky Ponting said that Sam Konstas won’t be able to survive in Test cricket. Konstas made his Test debut against India during the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The 19-year-old scored 60 runs off 65 balls and went after Jasprit Bumrah.
Apart from his batting, Konstas was involved in heated arguments with the Indian players. He provoked Jasprit Bumrah on Day 1 of the fifth Test and was then targeted by the visitors. Ponting opined on the performance of the batter and urged him to work on his batting technique.
“I don’t think he can survive as an opener if he continues to play like that. He will learn from the two games he played against India. It was a big stage and he enjoyed at the Melbourne Cricket Ground,” Ponting said on the ICC Review show.
Ponting mentioned that Konstas will take time to adjust himself to demands of international cricket. “I have seen young players getting overawed before making their mark in international cricket. They need a few games or a couple of series to work out on what they need to be successful,” he added.
Konstas amassed 113 runs from two matches at an average of 28.25 and a strike rate of 81.88. Konstas will be eager to continue his form in the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka.
