GLADSTONE — Field crews in Gladstone worked diligently to get the field ready for Monday’s doubleheader that saw Schaffer defeat Tri-County 5-4 and Norway defeat Kingsford 2-1.
Tri-County certainly had its chances Monday night as they loaded the bases in the first and third innings and came away with only one run in the two innings.
“Those innings were huge,” Tri-County coach P.J. Dahm said. “We had a hard time cashing in with runners in scoring position and that was the difference in the game.”
Schaffer got off to a fast start scoring three runs in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI-single by Caleb Cannon to give Schaffer a 3-0 lead after one inning.
“We have good success at the top of our order,” Schaffer coach Jason Davis said. “We have struggled at the bottom of the order this season but as a team we gritted it out and made enough plays to get the win.”
Tri-County cut the deficit to one as Anthony Kraus scored on a throwing error in the second inning and Hayden Karvinen scored on a wild pitch in the third.
Schaffer added two runs in the fourth inning on a pair of wild pitches to extend the lead to 5-2.
Lane Porter had a sacrifice fly for Tri-County in the top of the sixth to score a run and Brady Dahm scored on a wild pitch but fell one run short.
In the second game, Kingsford was first on the board as Will Rice tripled and scored on a throwing error in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Norway responded with a pair of runs in the third game as Liam Smith scored on a bunt by Weston Bartles who later scored on a wild pitch to give Norway the lead.
The game was in the fifth inning when Kingsford’s Andrew Olson threw his 86th pitch. Little League pitchers are limited to 85 pitches. Violation of this rule may result in the team in violation to forfeit the game.
Little League representatives were discussing the matter. Then lightning made its presence felt at Howes Field. The game was called off after five innings.
Norway pitcher Reed Anderson earned the win, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts and zero walks.
