LAKE MILLS — The St. Edmond baseball team begins postseason play here Saturday night against Lake Mills.
First pitch in this Class 1A, District 3 first round contest is set for 7 p.m.
The winner between the Gaels (2-20 overall) and Bulldogs (15-5) advances to the district semifinal on Tuesday against either Bishop Garrigan or North Iowa. The district final is scheduled for July 12, with Saint Ansgar, West Bend-Mallard or Northwood-Kensett on the other side of the bracket.
Junior Grant Galles has pushed his batting average up over .350, as he has double-digit runs scored and stolen bases. Junior Kinnick Henning and eighth-grade Julian Blanco are hitting just under .300, as Blanco leads the team in RBI.
Juniors Kinnick Henning, Jack McElroy and Ethan Swisher all have over 10 steals on the year.
Blake Bartlett — an eighth-grader — and McElroy have earned the two pitching wins, as they are also first and second in strikeouts.
Lake Mills is led at the plate by senior Hayden Helgeson, as he is hitting just under .400. Hegelson, classmate Jackson Gaul, freshman Leif Rogne and junior Zach Stene are the leaders in RBI, while Stene paces the team in stolen bases.
On the mound, Korbin Abele is 5-0 with an earned run average under three. Asher Reese, Kane Koch, Stephen Brandenburg, Lucas Helgeland, Gaul and Rogne have all earned wins.
This is the first meeting between St. Edmond and Lake Mills since the 2010 postseason when the Gaels scored a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs. Current SEHS activities director David Flattery was a freshman on that squad, striking out nine batters in the win.
