WASHINGTON –  U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has introduced the Collegiate Sports Integrity Act.
According to a release by Paul’s office, the legislation aims to restore free-market principles to college athletics by exempting intercollegiate athletic conferences, associations and participating schools from federal antitrust laws.”
The release states that antitrust laws have allowed judges “to dictate the rules of college sports.”
Officials say the bill would put decision-making back in the hands of those directly involved, allowing schools and student-athletes to “voluntarily negotiate fair, flexible agreements that reflect their own values” rather than a federal mandate.
“This is about economic liberty,” Paul said. “College athletes and schools should be free to come to the table and make their own deals—without unelected judges micromanaging every detail. Whether it’s compensation, eligibility or academic standards, Washington shouldn’t be calling the plays.”
According to officials, this legislation has been introduced amid “growing legal uncertainly following a wave of rulings.” The release states examples of this include a December decision that struck down NCAA eligibility rules and a June settlement that opened an option to direct payments to athletes.
