Shami Takes Jibe At Selectors; Says He's Not Bound To Give Them Updates – Cricket.com

Mohammed Shami, who was the joint-highest wicket-taker in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, has found himself out of India’s ODI squad for the Australia tour. India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar, on being asked about Shami’s omission from the squad, said he did not have any idea about his fitness.
Reacting to that, Shami said that he is not the authority to issue fitness certificates and is not bound to give updates to anyone.
“About giving an update, it’s not my responsibility to give an update or ask for an update. It’s not my job to give updates on my fitness. My job is to go to the NCA (Centre of Excellence), prepare and play matches,” Indian Express quoted Shami as saying on October 14 (Tuesday).
“Woh unki baat hai unko kaun update deta hai, kisne nahin diya (It is their matter as to who gives them updates or not). It’s not my responsibility,” added the Bengal’s pacer ahead of his team's Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season opener against Uttarakhand at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Shami is right in the sense that CoE gives fitness certificates and players are not the ones that take their fitness to the selectors. Adding more to his frustration, the 35-year-old said, “I have said this before… Selection is not in my hands. If there is a fitness issue, I shouldn’t be here playing for Bengal.”
“I think I do not need to speak about this and create a controversy. If I can play four-dayers (Ranji Trophy), I can also play 50-overs cricket,” he added.
The right-arm pacer last played Tests for India during the 2021-23 World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at Lord’s.
