It is not often that a young Indian batter gets compared to an Australian great, but Shubman Gill has forced that conversation.
At just 26, Gill has already taken charge of India’s ODI and Test captaincies. His form across all formats has been so superb that fans are now drawing parallels with Steve Smith, a man who was already one of the best in world cricket at the same age.

Both batters have showcased different styles as Gill has an elegant stroke play and Smith has an unorthodox technique, yet their numbers at 26 look strikingly similar.
How do they really compare when you line up the stats side by side? Let us take a look.
At 26, Shubman Gill has become the face of Indian cricket’s next generation. After taking over the reins from Rohit Sharma in Test cricket, he looked comfortable in leadership ole.
By this age, he has played crucial innings in Test matches, dominated limited-overs cricket and earned respect as a dependable top-order player.
At 26, Steve Smith was already Australia’s backbone in Test cricket. He had transformed from a leg-spinner to a world-class batter with an unusual technique.

Statistically, it’s a very close contest. At 26, Gill has played 155 international innings, scoring 6319 runs at an average of 45.78, with 19 centuries and 26 half-centuries.
Smith, meanwhile, had 6365 runs from 159 innings, averaging 46.80, also with 19 centuries and 27 fifties. His top score was 215, and interestingly, both have nearly identical conversion rates from fifties to hundreds.
Gill has one more duck than Smith (7 to 6), but in the grand picture, their stats are almost mirror images. It’s a rare comparison that holds true across all three formats- Test, ODI, and T20I.
