Team India’s crossover with Manchester United allowed skipper Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir to speak to their counterparts, Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Amorim. The duo shared insights into those chats in a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on their social media channels.
The Men in Blue met with the Red Devils on the sidelines of their tour of England, where they are playing five Tests under the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Their upcoming Test is at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground, which is about a kilometre away from United’s home stadium, which has the same name.
“It’s very exciting when you are able to meet top athletes in the world from another sport," Gill said in the video. “To get to know their stories is very inspiring, how you’re playing two different sports, but the mindset that you play with most of the time is very similar. He (Bruno) just told me that there is pressure at times but it’s kind of similar when you step onto the field, you don’t really think about all the things that people expect from you. It’s more about you being able to enjoy your game and enjoy the sport that you love."
Fernandes is arguably United’s best player currently, and among the most popular during a time when the storied club is undergoing one of its most difficult phases.
Gambhir and Amorim, meanwhile, shared ideologies and found common ground in the two sports.
“I’ve been here in 2014 as well. This is a completely different experience because you end up chatting with the players, you end up charting with Ruben as well, which which was a nice interaction that what his ideology is towards theme sport and what my ideology is, the basic foundation of a team sport is very similar, where I feel that I think it’s the player that adapts to what the team needs rather than the team that adapts to the individual and that is the culture which we want to play," said Gambhir.

Interestingly, both are under similar pressure at the moment. Amorim has taken over a United side in disarray and is trying to rebuild everything from scratch, especially the team culture. However, the team’s performances — the first season under him saw a record-low finish of 15th in the Premier League — will need to improve for him to be able to save his job this year.
Similarly, India has won just four of 13 Tests under Gambhir and the rumblings of opting for ‘split-coaching’ have begun.
